Earthquakes rock North Hawaii Wednesday (Oct 19)

A series of earthquakes rocked North Hawaii Wednesday afternoon (Oct 19) with the first quake occurring at 2:10 p.m. at a magnitude 4.5M followed by at least four aftershocks of at least 3.0 magnitude and a swarm of smaller aftershocks. There is no tsunami threat from these earthquakes according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Matson decreasing fuel surcharge for Hawaii, Guam/CNMI and Micronesia

As a result of recent declines in bunker fuel prices, Matson announced today that it is decreasing its fuel surcharge by three percentage points, from 45.5% to 42.5% for its Hawaii service, and from 47% to 44% for its Guam/CNMI and Micronesia service, effective this Sunday, September 25, 2011.

HOWEVER – EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE SOMETIMES GENERATE LOCAL TSUNAMIS THAT CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS LOCATED WITHIN A HUNDRED KILOMETERS OF THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES IN THE REGION OF THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION.

State expands online unemployment claims filing

The Hawai‘i State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR) expanded its online services to allow people to reactivate their unemployment claims on the internet beginning July 11, 2011, which will reduce their wait either at the unemployment office or via the telephone. This new option applies to people restarting their existing unemployment claim.
