This is a Civil Defense Flash Flood Watch update for Sunday, April 15 at 4 p.m. The National Weather Service has discontinued the Flood Watch for the Island of Hawaii. A Flood Advisory is still in effect for East Hawaii.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Hawaii Island until 8 p.m.

At 4:52 p.m. weather radar and rain gages indicated that heavy rain is persisting over the slopes in the South Kohala and North Kona districts. Gulches crossing Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) between Puuanahulu and Waimea were at risk of overflowing. Some of these gulches also flow near Waikoloa Village and into Puako. Rainfall may continue for several more hours.

At 9:23 p.m. weather radar showed a large band of heavy rain moving onshore into the Ka‘u district of Hawaii Island from east of Volcano to South Point. The heavy rain will continue moving slowly to the northwest into upslope areas with rainfall rates of 2 to   3 inches per hour likely. The ground is already saturated in this area from earlier heavy rains. Excessive runoff is likely and Highway 11 at Kawa Flats may be vulnerable to closure due to flooding.

At 11:17 p.m. weather radar and gages continue to report heavy showers and thunderstorms moving across the north Kona and both Kohala districts.

Police report: Hualalai Road at the intersection of Oni Oni Street in Kailua-Kona is now open, proceed with caution.

The flash flood warning has been replaced with a flash flood watch until midnight tonight.

A very moist and unstable air mass will continue to produce locally heavy showers and thunderstorms this evening. Saturated soils from recent and current rainfall across the state will increase the risk for flash flooding.

Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 11) in Ka‘u is closed between the 58 and 59 mile markers due to flooding across the roadway making it impassible. There is no projection as to when the roadway will open due to heavy rains.

At 8:54 p.m. weather radar showed areas of heavy rain developing near Kailua-Kona, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Hawi. These areas of heavy rain were nearly stationary.

Currently heavy rains and some flooding conditions are being reported across areas of both east and west Hawaii. The current unstable weather conditions are likely to continue through tomorrow and result in periods of heavy rains across all parts of the island.
