Fire destroys home in Hawaiian Acres Friday (April 18)

Firefighters answered a 5:23 p.m. alarm for a structure fire at 16-2000 Hopue Road in Hawaiian Acres Friday (April 18).

The East Keaau volunteer firefighters were first on the scent to fight the blaze which had engulfed the 16×10 foot cabin style home and nearby brush surrounding it. Firefighters had the fire under control 15 minutes after arriving on scene with the fire declared out at 5:50 p.m.

Jeep burns in Hilo garage, house spared Saturday (April 12)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 9:28 alarm Saturday (April 12) to 272 Kaiulani Street in Hilo for a vehicle on fire.

Firefighers arrived to find a 2010 Jeep inside of a garage with the engine compartment on fire. The fire was spreading to the walls and ceiling of the garage. Crews put out the fire and used fans to remove smoke from the garage and residence.

The loss in the fire is estimated to be $24,500 with the house escaping major damage.

Vacant house destroyed by fire in Milolii Saturday (March 29)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 9:29 a.m. alarm Saturday (March 29) to a Lehua Avenue home in Milolii on fire.

Crews arrived to find a single story home engulfed in flames and partially collapsed. Firefighers had the fire under control by 10:15 a.m. and out by noon.

Hampering firefighting efforts was the closest source of water for fire trucks being in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

The home was a total loss, there were no injuries reported the owner is unknown and it appeared to be vacant.

Stove fire in Hilo quickly contained Saturday (March 29)

Fire crews responded to a 2:49 p.m. alarm Saturday (March 29) to 2050 Kilauea Avenue in Hilo for a stove fire.

Firefighters arrived to find flames coming out of the back of a stove and were able to shut-off the gas line and extingush the fire in a few minutes.

Damage was estimated to be $500 and the cause was determined to be a tiny hole in the propane line to the stove leaking.

Quick thinking son saves home in Papaaloa Saturday (March 22)

Fire/rescue crews answered a 4:58 a.m. alarm Saturday (March 22) to 35-2040 Nanu Street in Papaaloa for a laundry room fire.

Crews arrived to find a laundry room fire which had been extinguished. The homeowner’s son had awoken to the sound of crackling noises and found the laundry sink ablaze with fire spreading to the walls. The son used a garden hose to extinguish the fire before fire crews arrived.

Fire burns woodshop in Fern Acres Monday morning (March 17)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 7:52 a.m. alarm Monday (March 17) to 11-3592 Hibiscus Street in Puna.

Crews arrived to find a single story garage type structure engulfed in flames. Crews contained the fire to the structure to prevent it spreading to a home. Firefighters used 8,000 gallons of water to extinguish the 22-by-20 foot wood working workshop on fire. The fire was reported to be under control at 8:26 a.m. and out at 8:45 a.m.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 5:09 a.m. alarm Sunday (Jan 12) to 16-1451 Ope‘a Pe‘a Street in Hawaiian Acres for a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find a 900 square foot building engulfed in flames with live power lines down on the ground.

Firefighters find body in remains of Eden Roc structure fire

Fire/rescue units responded for a 7:09 p.m. alarm Tuesday (Dec 24) to 11-2830 Palainui Avenue in the Eden Roc subdivision for a structure fire.

Crews found a 600 square foot single story structure engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the blaze crews found the remains of a body in the structure.
