A 42-year-old Hilo woman has died from a single-vehicle crash the evening of January 23 on Haku Nui Road in Captain Cook.

She has been identified as Chantel Kaaumoana.

Responding to a 9:24 p.m. call, police determined that a 1981 American Jeep operated by a 34-year-old Captain Cook women had been traveling west on Haku Nui Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. The collision caused Kaaumoana to be ejected from the vehicle and to sustain life-threatening injuries.

He was identified through fingerprints as 37-year-old Michael Simmons of O’Brien, Oregon.

A 34-year-old Ocean View woman died following a two-vehicle crash Friday night (January 6) on Highway 11 just north of the 96-mile marker.

She was identified as Mona Yoshitaro.

Responding to a 7:18 p.m. call Friday, police determined that  a 2003 Kia four-door sedan operated by Yoshitaro had been traveling north on Highway 11 near the 96-mile marker when it crossed left of center on the roadway and collided head-on with a 2003 Nissan pickup truck that was traveling south.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 6:53 p.m. alarm Thursday (Jan 5) to Pahoa-Kalapana Road (Route 130) near the 13 mile marker for a two car crash.

Crews arrived to rescue a 50-year-old man from the crash, he was transported to Hilo Medical Center where he died. Three other people in the crash were taken to HMC in serious condition.

The Hawai'i Police Department reports that Ali'i Drive south of the Queen Kalama Avenue intersection in Kailua-Kona is now open. The south bound lane was previously closed as Traffic Enforcement Unit Officers continued their investigation into an earlier traffic accident. The Hawai'i Police Department thanks the public for their patience and understanding.

A 31-year-old Kona woman was involved in a one-vehicle traffic casualty Saturday morning (December 24) in Kailua-Kona.

She was identified as Bristol Thompson of Kailua-Kona.

Responding to a 2:19 a.m. call Saturday, police determined that Thompson had been taken by personal vehicle to the Kona Community Hospital emergency room with life-threatening injuries sustained in a one-vehicle traffic casualty earlier on Aliʻi Drive.

A 21-year-old Pāhoa woman died following a two-vehicle crash Thursday morning (December 15) in Keaʻau.

She was identified as Nicole Kahoopii.

Responding to a 6:38 a.m. call, police determined that a 2008 GMC sports-utility vehicle was traveling Pāhoa-bound on Highway 130 at the Shower Drive/Pōhaku Drive intersection when it broadsided a 2013 Buick sedan that was being driven by Kahoopii and turning Keaʻau-bound from Pōhaku Drive.

A woman and a man died in a two-vehicle traffic crash Thursday afternoon (December 1) in Kona near the 31.5-mile marker of Highway 190.

They have been identified as 45-year-old Jeongah Hyun of Kailua-Kona and 46-year-old Iljung Nam of South Korea.

Responding to a 12:35 p.m. call Thursday, police determined that Hyun had been operating a silver 2006 Mazda multi-purpose vehicle on Highway 190 just north of the 31.5-mile marker, when she crossed left of center and was broadsided by a white 2013 Peterbilt dump truck that was heading south on Highway 190. The operator of the dump truck, a 46-year-old Honokaʻa man, was taken to Kona Community Hospital with minor injuries. Hyun and Nam, her passenger, were pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:10 p.m. and 6:11 p.m., respectively.
