A woman and a man died in a two-vehicle traffic crash Thursday afternoon (December 1) in Kona near the 31.5-mile marker of Highway 190.

They have been identified as 45-year-old Jeongah Hyun of Kailua-Kona and 46-year-old Iljung Nam of South Korea.

Responding to a 12:35 p.m. call Thursday, police determined that Hyun had been operating a silver 2006 Mazda multi-purpose vehicle on Highway 190 just north of the 31.5-mile marker, when she crossed left of center and was broadsided by a white 2013 Peterbilt dump truck that was heading south on Highway 190. The operator of the dump truck, a 46-year-old Honokaʻa man, was taken to Kona Community Hospital with minor injuries. Hyun and Nam, her passenger, were pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:10 p.m. and 6:11 p.m., respectively.

A 63-year-old man died while surfing Saturday morning in waters off Lighthouse Road in Halaula.

He has been identified As John Willard of Waikoloa.

In response to a 10:16 a.m. call Saturday reporting an unresponsive man at a surf spot known as “Lighthouse,” officers learned that Willard had not been surfing long when he caught a wave and disappeared. Other surfers in the area went to investigate. They found Willard floating face down in the water and took him to shore.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:15 a.m. alarm Saturday (Nov 12) to Kauhola Point in Halaula, North Kohala for a drowning.

At the popular surf spot 'Kohala Lighthouse' surfers found a 63-year-old man face down in the ocean not breathing and without a pulse. Surfers began CPR in the water and brought the man to shore where firefighters took over resuscitation efforts.

A-10-year old Hōnaunau girl died from a vehicle-pedestrian crash Wednesday afternoon (November 2) in South Kona near the 106-mile marker of the Māmālahoa Highway (Route 11).

She has been identified as Janexty Kaaloa.

Responding to a 1:10 p.m. call, police determined that a tan 1987 Jeep pickup truck had been traveling south on Māmālahoa Highway when it struck Kaaloa who had been running westbound across the highway. Kaaloa sustained critical injuries from the collision. She was taken to Kona community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:33 p.m.

The man who died from injuries sustained in a pedestrian/vehicle crash in Hilo last month has been identified through fingerprints as 64-year-old Gary Hall of Hilo.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash on October 3 near the 500 block of Kīlauea Avenue to contact Officer Keith Nacis at 961-8119 or keith.nacis@hawaiicounty.gov.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the island wide Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for information about a two-vehicle traffic accident September 3 on the Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) just south of the Kamehameha III Highway intersection.

During the investigation, police learned that a green Subaru or Isuzu sports utility vehicle may have caused the victim, Breanna Fujimoto, to cross the centerline of the roadway just prior to the head-on collision with a 2015 Nissan SUV.

Responding to a 12:22 p.m. call, police determined that a 2000 Ford pickup truck was traveling south on Komohana Street and starting to make a left hand turn down Ponahawai Street when it was struck by a 2012 Nissan sedan that was traveling north on Komohana Street.

An unidentified man died following a vehicle-pedestrian crash October 3 in Hilo.

His name is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of his family.

Responding to a 7:43 p.m. call, police determined that a 2007 Dodge pickup was traveling south near the 500 block on Kilauea Avenue, when it struck the male pedestrian who was not in a crosswalk.

The pedestrian was taken to Hilo Medical Center for his injuries and then transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday (October 4) determined that the man who died Sunday (October 2) after being involved in a one-vehicle traffic collision on the Māmālahoa Highway (Route 11) in Honalo, South Kona, died from injuries sustained in the accident.

On Tuesday (October 4) he was identified as 23-year-old Jackson Mathers of Miloliʻi.

An unidentified man died following a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning (October 2) on Māmālahoa Highway (Route 11) in Honalo, South Kona.

Responding to a 2:36 a.m. call, police determined that a 2013 Subaru station wagon had been traveling south on Māmālahoa Highway just south of the 114-mile marker when the operator failed to negotiate a turn in the roadway, which then caused the vehicle to run off the mauka shoulder of the roadway and to collide with a utility pole. The operator was ejected from the vehicle, and he sustained critical injuries. The unidentified man was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:26 a.m. Sunday.

A 30-year-old woman died from a three-vehicle traffic crash Thursday evening (September 15) in North Kona near the 28.5 mile marker of Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Route 190).

She has been identified as Sarah Thurber of Kailua-Kona.

Responding to a 9:26 p.m. call, police determined that Thurber had been traveling north on the Hawaiʻi Belt Road in a 2007 Kia sedan when the car crossed the centerline of the highway and crashed head-on into a 2016 Jeep SUV traveling south and operated by a 50-year-old California woman.
