Kaʻū patrol officers responded to the reported drowning at 7:15 p.m. A 47-year-old Ocean View man reported that he had been on shore while his friend was scuba diving for fish fronting the lighthouse at South Point. The scuba diver entered the water around 6:45 p.m. About a half-hour later, his friend heard him yelling for help and called 911.

Big Island police are investigating a possible drowning in Hilo on Wednesday (September 14) as a coroner’s inquest.
The man who died has been identified as 20-year-old Brystan Alidon of Hilo.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 12:42 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Sept 14) for two Opihi pickers in the ocean off Paukaa Drive in North Hilo after a witness called 911 for help.
Rescue personnel found an opihi picker treading water 50 yards offshore who directed crews to where the second opihi picker was last seen. The first picker was airlifted from the ocean with Chopper One as a fire department rescue specialist searched for the second picker.

An autopsy conducted Monday (April 4) has determined that 59-year-old Franklin Lewis Smith of Kailua-Kona died of salt water drowning. The autopsy also determined that injuries to his head and leg were consistent with a fall onto rocks.
The case has been reclassified as a public accident.

Big Island police are investigating a possible drowning in waters off the coast of Ka’ohe, South Kona.
Responding to a 10:11 a.m. call on January 9, officers learned that a 51-year-old woman, identified as Jodi Kessler of Hartland, Wisconsin, was snorkeling with family members when she became distressed and began to struggle to stay afloat. Family members were able to get her to shore and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 3:54 p.m. alarm Monday (Oct 11) for a bodyboarder drowning at Kaimu Beach fronting Kalapana Village Cafe.
Witnesses reported a 33 year-old bodyboard was in distress in high surf conditions when he was submerged under pounding waves offshore. The bodyboarder then resurfaced face down in the surf then sight of him was lost in the white wash of surf and he was not seen again.

Responding to a 10:15 p.m. call Friday (September 3), officers learned that a 52-year-old man identified as Bruce Berard of Kailua-Kona was night diving with companions when they found him unresponsive in the water. Berard was brought to shore, where his companions attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Emergency medical services personnel transported Berard to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:47 a.m. Saturday (September 4).

A 23-year-old Captain Cook woman apparently drowned while swimming in waters off Ke’ei Beach in Captain Cook on Tuesday.
The victim has been identified as Karly A. Kojimoto.
Kona patrol officers responded to a 6 p.m. report of a possible drowning and learned that bystanders had heard the victim calling for help, towed her to shore and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
