Kahaluu Beach Park partial closures due to coral spawning in May and June 2018

Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation is informing the public that Kahalu‘u Beach Park will be closed from 7 a.m. – 12 noon on May 1, May 2, May 31, and June 1, 2018, due to anticipated coral spawning events.

Unusual corals discovered off the Kona coast

A coral species new to the main Hawaiian Islands has been discovered in West Hawaii by a research team of divers from the state DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources.

ReefWatchers and other interested folks  will join in the hunt for spawning corals again  this year.  His articles on spawnings in 2007 and  2008 have highlighted the value of volunteers  making observations and reporting their  information.  Together we have documented  information on cauliflower coral, antler coral  and lobe or mound corals.  None of this work had  been done before.  The ReefWatchers have made  themselves a place in marine science history.
