Big Island Road Runners presents the Hawaii Island United Way Resolution 5k Run/Walk at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan 7.

Hilo Course: Liliuokalani Park (Near Hilo Hawaiian) via Banyan Drive, Ice Pond, Kalanianaole Avenue to turnaround.

Kona Course: Old Kona Airport (Near Park) via walking/jogging path, Kuakini Highway to turnaround.

The Big Island Road Runners proudly hosts this ‘electrifying’ run to benefit the Hawaii Island United Way (HIUW).

Along with the generosity of HELCO, we thank you for making a Resolution to “Energize Your Life” and the life of our community.

All net proceeds will stay on the Big Island; targeting 53 HIUW locally funded programs.

Parker School’s 12th annual George Heneghan Fun Run took place Sunday (Nov 6) in Waimea. 91 runners and their supporters turned out for the early morning event from which all proceeds benefit Parker School’s athletic program. Both the 1K and 5K race runners began and finished their loops at the Parker Lower School campus.

The event was established in memory of Hawaii architect George Heneghan, who was also an accomplished athlete, teacher and coach. He coached cross-country and track at Parker from 1992-1998.

Parker School extends its gratitude to all the participants, volunteers and sponsors, particularly lead sponsor Dr. John Stover, for making this event possible and a success.

The HPA girls ganged up on the rest of the state and brought home the cross country state crown this weekend on Maui.

While they surrendered the first four spots, the HPA girls hung together and secured places 5-9.

Honors go to Kristiana Van Pernis and Mariah Haight – a pair of sophomores – and their teammates Zoe Sims, Emily Evans and Kelly Ulrich.

Also in the top 15 were No. 11 Kelsie Kobayashi of Waiakea and No. 15 Kari Van Mols of Kealakehe.

The Hilo girls team also ran its way into the top 10 with a seventh place finish.

Waiakea boys’ team landed in ninth place overall, with a top showing from Jackson Halford in eighth place.

Rounding out the top 10 in the state was Honokaa.

The Pau Hana Sunset 10km Fun Run & Walk overall winners were Billy Barnett of Volcano and Rani Tanimoto of Kona.

The event, sponsored by K-Swiss and the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, was a benefit for the West Hawaii Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Students from seven Big Island middle schools will participate in the 4th Annual Waimea Middle School Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 24 on the school’s campus.

Participating teams will be coming from Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Parker School, Kohala Intermediate, Paauilo School, Waikoloa School and Hilo Christian Academy. Nearly 30 WMS students also will participate.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Participants will walk the 1.5-mile course at 9 a.m.; the girls race will start at 10 a.m. and the boys at 10:30 a.m., with the awards presentation and lunch to follow.

The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows hosts the inaugural K-Swiss Pau Hana Sunset 10km Fun Run & Walk 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 – a benefit for the West Hawaii Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

The event, which is taking place on Mauna Lani’s world-famous Francis H. Ii Brown North golf course, is open to the entire community and is drawing the support of many pro triathletes who will already be in Hawaii preparing for the Ironman World Championship the following weekend.

Reigning Ironman Women’s World Champion Mirinda Carfrae will be there, along with other pros who have signed up to race in the elite category, including Luke Bell, Belinda Granger, Tim DeBoom, Hillary Biscay, Joe Gambles and local favorite, Bree Wee.

General Manager of Mauna Lani Bay Brian Butterworth said the event “is about bringing people together and enjoying some fun, friendly competition in support of one of our community’s most invaluable causes. Whether you run or walk, just enjoy being in Hawaii and soak up the spectacular surroundings, including our hard-to-beat Kohala Coast sunset.”

Proceeds from the event will be used to support Hawaii Island cancer patients and their families by providing services such as inter-island airline tickets for travel to treatment facilities, transportation to medical appointments, counseling programs and more.

Leading triathlon footwear and apparel brand, K-Swiss, has thrown its support behind the event by donating “K-Swiss dream bags” for category winners and T-shirts for all participants. Numerous other prizes will be up for grabs, too.

After the run and walk, participants and friends and family are invited to enjoy a fun-filled awards-ceremony and a ‘Pau Hana’ (meaning ‘after work’ in Hawaiian) outdoor BBQ and beer garden party with live music.

Jason Braswell, of Kailua-Kona, won the 2011 Volcano Art Center Rain Forest Half-Marathon on Saturday.

His time of 1:23:10 just pipped Pete Boksanski, of Kapolei, who came in at 1:23:36.

Volcano’s Lyman Perry rounded out the top three at 1:24:53.

On the women’s side, it was a Big Island sweep. Rani Tanimoto, of Keakalekua, won in 1:27:51.

Trailing her were Kimberley Pierce, of Hilo, at 1:38:48 and Elda Carreon, of Kailua-Kona, at 1:44:43.

In the 10K, Mark Noetzel, of Waimea, and Serena Chamberlain, of Kailua-Kona were tops. The finished in 48:00 and 49:28, respectively.

Chamberlain’s remarkable run put her in third place overall.

In the 5K, Scott Hunter hammered out a 19:12 time and Karina Lawrence was 9th overall and the top women at 23:49. Both runners are from Hilo.

MEDIA RELEASE

Saturday, Aug. 20 marks the 2nd Annual Rain Forest Runs, a half marathon, 10K run and 5K run/walk. This event takes place at 4,000 feet eleveation and traverses the majestic native rain forest in quaint Volcano Village and the ranches near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

All distances will be open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities, participating for health, enjoyment and to raise funds for Volcano Art Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Event Location & Times

The Start/Finish is at Cooper Center on Wright Road.
Start Times: Half Marathon – 7 a.m. 10K Run – 7:30 a.m. 5K Run/Walk – 7:45 a.m.

Course Descriptions

The 5K and 10K participants weave through the lush native rain forest on the mostly flat, tranquil streets of Volcano Village, while the Half Marathon will continue into the more hilly surrounding upper ranch lands with views of two stunning volcanoes, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, in the distance (elevation change is 650 feet).

Early Check-in, Late Registration & Carbo-Load Dinner

Friday, Aug. 19: Check-in or register 2-6 p.m.; dinner 5-8 p.m.

You can check-in or register for the race the night before at the Ohia Room of the Kiliauea Military Camp in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, plus indulge in a “carbo-load” dinner at the KMC Crater Rim Cafe. This all-you-can-eat-buffet of the island’s favorite foods is open to all runners, family, friends and the public.

Cost is $17 for ages 12 & up; $8.50 for ages 6-11 and free for ages 5 & under. Pick up pre-purchased carboload tickets at the Ohia Room between 2 and 6pm. Park entrance fees may apply.

There is NO race day registration for the Half Marathon. Registration closes at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19. 5K & 10K registration closes at 7 a.m. on race day.

Race Finish & Awards

You must cross the Finish Line with your race number pinned to the front of your shirt to receive an official time card. Volcano Art Center presents unique art awards to the top three male and female winners of the Half Marathon, to the overall winners for the 10K and 5K and to the top two male and female winners in each ten-year age division for all four race events.

In addition, medals will be presented to all Half Marathon finishers and the Kilauea Military Camp will present awards to the top male and female winners of the Military Division for each race.

T-Shirts

T-shirts are given to all registered runners. Souvenir race merchandise will be available for purchase at registration and on race day. Late Entrants will not be guaranteed a shirt, and will receive whatever shirts are left over, if any, after the race.

Thanks to a gift the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s cross-country program’s fall season is bound to wow. Carole Kai Charities, Inc., organizer of Kaiser Permanente Great Aloha Run (GAR), donated $25,000 to support the student runners and has helped UH Hilo Athletics reinstate the women’s team.

The turnaround comes shortly after Head Coach Jaime Guerpo learned that the cross-country and cheerleading programs were to be suspended for two years due to budget cuts. “We are so thankful to Carole…we may have had to hang up our shoes completely if not for the passion and generosity of one of Hawaii’s biggest health advocates.”

“I was touched by Jaime’s dedication to the program and with that kind of dedication, you know that the program is going to be strong and vibrant,” GAR President Carole Kai-Onouye said.

The Vulcan women will compete in a five-race season consisting of the UH Hilo Invitational, the PacWest Championship and races hosted by Brigham Young University-Hawaii, Chaminade University and Hawaii Pacific University.

UH Hilo Director of Athletics Dexter Irvin credits Coach Guerpo with the team’s reprieve. “He knows the situation the department is in and accepted the challenge to keep the program running despite the loss of operating and scholarship funds, as well as his salary,” said Irvin.

Guerpo enters his 13th season in 2011, coaching an entirely new team made up of six walk-ons – two from the Big Island and one each from Nevada and Nebraska.

UH Hilo launched cross-country in the 1980s. The program was suspended during the 1989 and 1990 seasons under similar fiscal conditions and re-instated in 1991. Since then, the Vulcans claimed three conference championships and were consistent participants of post-season races.

Guerpo was named PacWest Cross-Country Coach of the Year. He also coaches the men’s team.

Justin Gillette is making the race his own. The 28-year-old Indiana runner scored his fourth straight title Sunday morning in the Kona Marathon.

Gillette’s winning time was 2:34:41, just 12 seconds quicker than his winning time last year.

Hiroyuki Nishimura, of Chiba, Japan, was second, coming in at 2:52:16. Rounding out the top three was Brian Hayes, of Kaneohe, in a time of 2:58:37.

On the women’s side, Valeria Sesto won her maiden crown in a race that takes runners from Keauhou Beach Resort along Alii Drive, through Kailua Village, then out to NELHA and back again.

Sesto, 38, from Lymington, England, finished in 3:05:44, earning her sixth place overall.

Second for the women was 2010 winner and wife of the men’s champion, Melissa Gillette in a time of 3:09:27.

Right behind was her brother-in-law and Justin’s brother, Jake, at 3:11:04. And keeping it all in the family, Jake’s wife, Laura, rounded out the top three women at 3:13:15.

Big Island bragging rights went to Hilo’s Matthias Wulf, 3:09:11, and Kailua-Kona’s Tanya Gusarchuk, 3:50:15.

Half-Marathon (results)

It was a clean sweep for the Big Island with Jason Braswell and Bree Wee. Braswell came in at 1:17:53 and Wee was second overall at 1:20:53.

10K (results)

Another sweep for Kailua-Kona as the husband-and-wife team of Penn Henderson and Rani Tanimoto claimed the 10K titles.

Henderson finished in 36:17 and Tanimoto earned third place overall with her time of 40:10.

In between the couple was teenager Taylor Steele of Bend, Ore. Steele, racing in the 1-19 age division, just pipped Tanimoto with a time of 39:04.

5K (results)

Cody Bergfalk, of Kailua-Kona, cruised to the win in 18:26, while the women’s winner was 14-year-old Kristiana Van Pernis, of Kailua-Kona at 22:23.

Van Pernis, a standout cross country runner for Hawaii Preparatory Academy, set a new record in the 12-14 girls division. Previously, the record stood at 22:36, set by Cassie Bird in 2007.

A total of 1,800 runners signed up for the UCC Coffee Kunitake Farms Kona Marathon, Half Marathon and Family Fun Runs.

The course record is 2:23:31, set by Eddy Hellebuyck in 2001. Hellebuyck was the last man to claim four titles in a row, 2000-2003.

The women’s record is 2:57:15, set by Eri Okubo in 2008.

For the half-marathon, Jonathan Lyau set the record of 1:12:14 in 1998. For the women, Darlene Mota recorded a 1:16:57 in 1995.

When the Special Olympics World Summer Games kick off next week in Greece, the Big Island will be well represented.

Louie Perry III, an outstanding runner from Pahoa, is one of three Hawaii athletes on Team USA.The other two athletes are from Oahu – swimmer Jenny Bensman and weightlifter Nick Pang.

The trio will be accompanied by their coaches, including Perry’s friend and mentor, Mar Ortaleza, a Full Life Direct Support worker.

Perry, a Pahoa High School graduate, likely will compete in the 1,500 meter run and 3,000 meter runs, and also will run a leg on the 4×400 relay.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Perry picked up four medals at the Hawaii State Special Olympics games:

* Gold Medal – individual 800 meter run (Perry set a new personal record and a Hawaii Special Olympics record)

* Gold Medal – 1,000 meter run

* Gold Medal – long jump

* Silver Medal – 4×100

A nature photographer, Perry, 27, also was recognized with a Certificate of Accomplishment Award at a recent Hawaii County Council meeting.

Comprised of 315 athletes and 125 coaches, Special Olympics Team USA joins 7,000 athletes from nearly 180 nations to compete in the World Games in Athens, June 25 – July 4. Additionally, the event will draw more than 25,000 volunteers, 3,000 event officials as well as thousands of families, spectators and journalists from every continent.

In addition to the athletes and coaches, Hawaii’s law enforcement officers will be represented at the World Games.

Honolulu Police Department Officer Trish Doronila was selected to represent Hawaii law enforcement, running in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg across Greece.

Deputy Chief Antonio Williams, U.S. Army Garrison, was chosen to be a team leader in the final leg, as well as two other Honolulu Police Department personnel, Sgt. Ben Moszkowicz and Major Kurt Kendro, who were asked to lead the invited guests security team in Athens.

Founded in 1968, the Special Olympics’ World Games is hosted every two years and showcases the abilities of athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The World Games is a platform for athletes, their families as well as the community and world leaders to attend policy summits and exchange ideas about fostering the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.

South Korea is scheduled to host Special Olympics’ World Winter Games in 2013.

The Unified T-Ball Team

Special Olympics West Hawaii traveled to Oahu May 27-29 to compete in the 2011 State Summer Games.  The West Hawaii team, comprised of 52 athletes, coaches and unified partners from Oceanview to Waimea, competed at the UH-Manoa campus with the 850 statewide athletes in softball, powerlifting, swimming and track and field events.

Opening ceremonies took place at Les Murakami Statium and welcomed over 2,500 volunteers participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run named for fallen police officer Troy Barboza.  Hawaii County Police Detective Renee Morinaka represented West Hawaii and enjoyed the run with endless smiles and enthusiasm.

The Sharks brought home five gold, five silver and four bronze medals from swimming events.

Special Olympics West Hawaii brought home seven gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals from the events.

The Sharks, led by head coach Holly DeGeal, medaled in 14 of the 20 events the swimmers entered with Kaiena Costa edging out two other swimmers in the 50m freestyle by less than one second.

The Cobras Tee-Ball team used the power of the the Phillip sisters, Malia Conner and Jennifer Poblano to net their fourth place finish.

Isaiah Wong crushed the competition with a 440 pound dead-lift in his 180 pound weight class.  The dual sport Phillip sisters also each took home a silver in the bench press competition.

The Kona speedsters burned up Ching Field track with Lendon Cariaga-Ventura and Damian Extor bringing home a combined four medals including a bronze in the 4x100m Unified relay.

The Kona Magua Unified Softball team played at Murakami Stadium to a third place finish behind the pitching and timely hitting of Don Tornow.  Unified sports teams are a team made up of a 50/50 mix of Special Olympics athletes and community partners without disabilities.

Special Olympics is dedicated to year-round sports training for children and adults with developmental disabilities.  We train all year round in 3 distinct sports seasons and are always open to new athletes and volunteers regardless of prior experiences with the developmentally disabled community.  Our next sports season consists of bocce ball and soccer.  We will host island wide teams on July 31st in a local competition and travel to Oahu in mid August for the State Aukake Classic.

The 33rd Annual Big Island Visitor Industry Charity Walk raised over $161,000 Saturday (May 14). The event benefits charities and non-profit organizations on the Big Island.

Over 900 walkers and 120 runner participated in the event covering three miles ending up at The Shops at Mauna Lani where food booths, music and awards were presented.

Dishing up the food was Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, Fairmont Orchid, Waikoloa Marriott, Mauna Kea Resort, Four Seasons Hualalai, Hilton Waikoloa, Hualalai Resort, Hilton Grand Vacations and Tommy Bahama’s. Entertainment was provided by Kekani along with complimentary 4D Movies at the Great 4-D Movie Ride.

The Charity Walk is a statewide event that occurs simultaneously on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai.
