WAIMEA, ISLAND OF HAWAI’I — Hawai’i residents and visitors are invited to witness first-hand what has been called “America’s original extreme sport” – bull riding – during a free public clinic conducted by several of the top members of the exclusive Professional Bull Riders (PBR) organization at Parker Ranch’s Paniolo Park on Fri., June 24, 2011. Registration to participate in the clinic begins at 11 a.m. The clinic will run from noon to 4 p.m. There is no charge and everyone’s invited.

Nationally recognized big money PBR bull riders, McKennon Wimberly and Sean Willingham, and stock contractor Mesa Pate will partner up with the Paniolo Preservation Society (PPS), Parker Ranch Round Up Club and Hawai’i Tourism Authority (HTA) to introduce this popular, adrenaline charged sport featuring powerful bulls provided by South Point Buckers.

By co-hosting the clinic, Parker Ranch Round Up Club will earn a contribution to its annual scholarship program which benefits the children of Parker Ranch families.

Likewise, PPS will fulfill its not-for-profit mission by creating an opportunity to share Hawai’i’s unique ranching story with PBR’s vast national and international television audiences. Also, “PPS, PBR and HTA hope to create interest in bringing an action-packed PBR event to Honolulu’s Aloha Stadium. Such an event would benefit both Hawai’i’s visitor and diversified agricultural industries while continuing to help perpetuate Hawai’i’s unique paniolo culture and heritage,” said PPS President Robby Hind.

The bull riding clinic is one of several Hawaiian ranching events that the PBR professionals will participate in and film to share with television audiences. Other events include a branding at Parker Ranch’s Wahinekea Corral at Makahalau and a benefit lu’au with entertainment by the Beamer-Solomon Halau o Po’ohala, which in addition to hula and music has an 80-year ranching history. These events will be filmed but are not open to the public.

All of the PBR Hawai’i Island events will be documented by David Neal Productions for features to be broadcast during PBR’s 2011 Built Ford Tough Series events, on television and in event arenas, as well as on www.PBR.com. The production company produces BFTS telecasts which are broadcast nationally each week on VERSUS with select events being shown on NBC and CBS. David Neal is a 30-time Emmy® Award winner and Peabody Award winner.

PBR is not entirely new to Hawai’i. The organization held an event on Maui in 2006 featuring Hawai’i bull rider Myron Duarte, and on Oahu with the Hawai’i All-Star Challenge. Also, Zack Brown, who has earned over $865,000 competing in PBR events, was raised on the North Shore of O’ahu.

About the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR)
PBR was created in 1992 when a group of 20 bull riders broke away from the traditional rodeo scene and decided to start a circuit for bull riders only. About the Paniolo Preservation Society (PPS)
Established in 1998, PPS works to increase public awareness of the historical, present-day and future significance of Hawai’i’s ranching industry, with emphasis on the roles and traditions of the paniolo. Among PPS’ significant achievements have been getting Hawai’i’s most famous paniolo — Ikua Purdy — installed in the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, and subsequently securing community support to commission a Fred Fellows bronze monument honoring Purdy. The monument sits in the heart of Waimea – his ‘aina hanau (birthplace). The Hawaii High School Rodeo Association (HHSRA) will begin its 2010 rodeo season Oct. 2.

HHSRA’s mission is to promote the sport of rodeo and the highest type of conduct and sportsmanship and expose its positive image to the general public; preserve the Western Heritage; offer a privilege of family bonding; offer an opportunity of continuing education; and maintain the highest regard for the livestock.

There are seven district rodeos on Hawaii Island, Maui, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai. Each island has a keiki, junior high, and high school division.

The junior high and high school competitors compete in their district and at the end of the rodeo season have a chance to compete at the state level.

The top four in each event then have a chance to compete nationally.

Keiki events include, dummy roping, goat undecorating, barrel racing, pole bending, keiki calf mugging, mutton bustin and calf riding.

Junior high girls compete in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, ribbon roping, breakaway roping and team roping.

Junior high boy events include chute dogging, bull riding, team roping, ribbon roping, calf roping, goat tying and breakaway.

The high school girls compete in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping and team roping.

The boys compete in bull riding, steer wrestling, bronc riding, bareback riding, team roping and calf roping.

During the season the competitors earn points for their places in each of their events ranging from 10 points to 1 point.

At the end of the season, the points are added up and the competitor with the most points in each event wins a belt buckles. The all-around cowboy and cowgirl win saddles.

Hawaii Island Rodeos are scheduled for the first Saturday and Sunday of the month.

Keiki (grades K-5) and Jr. High (grades 6-8) Divisions are 8 a.m. Saturdays; High School Division (grades 9-12) are 8 a.m. Sundays. All rodeos take place at the Paniolo Park in Waimea (Parker Ranch rodeo grounds).

Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Tyler Saito, a Parker School 10th-grader, earned a position on the Hawaii State high school rodeo team and traveled with 10 fellow teammates to Gillette, Wyoming, July 18-24 to compete at the 62nd Annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in the boys cutting competition.

Featuring more than 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian provinces, and Australia, the National High School Finals is the world’s largest rodeo. In addition to competing for $200,000 in prizes, NHSFR contestants vied for more than $350,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the National High school Rodeo National Champion.

To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 after two go-rounds of intense competition before advancing to the final championship performance.

Tyler finished in the top 20 in boys cutting, advanced to the championship performance and came in 13th overall in a field of more than 100 boy cutters.

Along with great rodeo competition and the chance to meet new friends from around the world, NHSFR contestants have the opportunity to represent their team in a volleyball tournament, enjoy nightly contestant dances, participate in a talent contest, compete in a NRA rifle shooting competition, test their skills in a Knowledge Bowl competition, have the chance to shop the ever-popular NHSFR western tradeshow, and visit the historical attraction of the “Cowboy State.”

The Hawaii Horse Owners Association hosts its 18th annual rodeo “The 2010 Panaewa Stampede” at the Panaewa Equestrian Center in Hilo.

Rodeo Clown JJ Harrison will return this year to keep the spectators and contestants alike on the edge of their seats or saddles as the case may be. In addition to traditional events, this popular two-day rodeo will feature three uniquely Hawaiian competitions: the “Poo Wai U”, “Double Mugging” and “Wahine (Women) Mugging” Events. Plus, Bull Riding with our cowboys and the Bull Run with the spectators!

The Hawaiian cowboy, known as “paniolo”, have a long history of handling cows, beginning in 1793 when King Kamehameha I was given a gift of a herd of cattle. Not having a ranch in the traditional sense, Kamehameha placed a “kapu” (taboo) on these cattle and allowed them to roam freely to insure their survival. By the 1830s, the wild cattle had become quite a nuisance and were often dangerous.

As trade and commerce with the world outside of Hawaii grew, the Hawaiian Kings needed goods to trade to support their royal expenses. The idea of commercial uses of these wild cattle thus came about. To help teach the Hawaiians how to handle the cattle, vaqueros were brought in from Mexico. The Hawaiian word “paniolo” was derived from this Spanish influence.

The “Poo Wai U” was a technique developed by the Paniolo to capture these free ranging, wild cattle. A wild steer would be lassoed around its horns and then tied to a tree. Overnight the cow would hopefully wear itself out. The next day the “paniolo” returns to roundup the steer.

At the rodeo event commemorating this activity, a cowboy will have to lasso a steer by the horns, pass the rope through a Y-shaped pole (simulating a tree), holding the steer to the pole and tie the rope to his horse. As the steers used for this event are not your friendly tame cow, the cowboy and his horse have to work well together.

“Double Mugging” is another unique event found only in Hawaiian rodeos. Harking back to the story of capturing wild cattle, tying them to a tree was only the first part of returning from areas overgrown with trees to the ranch with a cankerous wild cow. In this rodeo event, two “paniolo” will work together to knock a cow to the ground and tie up three of its legs.

This event involves full size steers and often turns into a wrestling match between man and beast or between women and beast in the Wahine Double Mugging Event.

Rodeo attendees will also be treated to roping, mugging and bronc riding along with Wahine (women) and Keiki (children) events.

Tickets will be on sale on both days at the Equestrian Center on Highway 11 going out of Hilo toward Volcano. Turn at the signs for the rodeo and the Panaewa Zoo. Admission is $6 for adults and children under 12 are free.

The action-packed weekend is an annual fundraiser to provide scholarships for school-age children of Parker Ranch employees. This year, the event also celebrates Hawaii’s 50th anniversary of statehood.

Family-style fun begins at noon Saturday with rodeo events that may include everything from open and dally team roping and double mugging, and po’o wai u, to saddle bronc, bull riding, junior bull riding, wahine barrel racing, wahine steer un-decorating, and more. 

Always fun and exciting to watch is the makule team roping competition. One team member must be over 40, one over 50. The crowd is always on its feet for the the keiki barrel racing for participants 12 & under, and mutton busting, or keiki sheep riding.

The Round Up Club, in partnership with Parker Ranch will be hosting an auction for saddle horses and 2-year old quarter horses.  Come at 10 a.m. to participate in the auction and purchase a Parker Ranch horse.  

For non-riders, come and watch and enjoy the fast pace of a Ranch horse auction.

Sunday’s rodeo action begins again at noon with more excitement throughout the afternoon. Food and refreshments will be available both days with on-going events lasting until 4 p.m.

Tickets are $5 per person in advance from the Parker Ranch Store at the Parker Ranch Center, Waimea or $6 at the gate on rodeo days. Children 10 and under are free.

Saturday May 23rd begins at noon with the Block Party Festival at the Honokaa Sports Complex, 1 block North of Mamane Street featuring our “New Keiki Corral Loads of “Free” activities including bouncy jumps, climbing wall, games, educational displays & activities…”A barrel of family fun” , Horseshoe competition & fun, vendor booths, & displays, rummage sale, Live music & entertainment. Don’t forget to come dressed for the Lil Cowgirl & Lil Cowboy Contest!

The Paniolo Parade begins at 4:00PM downtown Honokaa on Mamane Street ending at the Sports Complex, join us for this time honored tradition; Grand Marshall is Dr. William (Billy) Bergin.

At 5:00PM we open the barn again with the block party featuring Live Music & fun! Members of the Paniolo Hall of Fame will be honored for their contribution to Honokaa’s Heritage with Hawaiian Style steak BBQ plates featuring local grass fed beef will be served for dinner. At 7:00PM the “Saloon Girl contest” begins, don’t miss this crowd favorite! Following the Saloon Girl Contest we begin “Dancing in the Street with “Silver Spurs”, dance to live country music till the barn closes at 11:00PM. Best dressed Cowboys & Cowgirls pulled from the crowd during the event!

On Sunday May 24th & Monday May 25th at the Honokaa Rodeo grounds from Noon to Dark is the Annual Rodeo held by the Hawaii Island Saddle Club!
