More than 180 young athletes turned out Tuesday afternoon at Kealaheke High School football field to get some tips from the pros.

A handful of current and former NFL players conducted a hands-on clinic to teach football skills and techniques to Big Island boys and girls. Each participant also received an NFL Pro Bowl T-shirt that was autographed by the players and an NFL Pro Bowl sling backpack.

The second clinic is 3–5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25 at Keaau High School. The pro players and cheerleaders also are visiting island schools to deliver inspirational messages and talk about positive life choices.

“It’s awesome. It really shows how the NFL gives back to communities,” said county Parks and Recreation director Bob Fitzgerald. “It’s not just about the game, but the positive life models the players bring. The message is to get all our kids out for 60 minutes of recreational activity every day. That’s something we can totally support.”

Vince Manuwai signs his name one more time. (Photo by Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7)

Honolulu native Vince Manuwai, who played offensive line with the Jacksonville Jaguars, was leading a group of youngsters through some receiving drills after signing each student athlete’s jersey.

“It’s cool every year we get to do this,” he said. “To come to the outer islands is a great opportunity for the kids to get to see the players and interact with us.”

Manuwai said the clinics and school visits are not all about football.

“It’s more that they get to see the athletes and meet them,” he said. “It’s not about looking for talent or who’s going to be a top athlete. I’m a lineman and I’m out here teaching receiving!”

Field goal practice with Fred McCrary. (Photo by Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7)

Fred McCrary, Seattle Seahawks veteran fullback, was leading a raucous group in the art of catching with your hands, not your body.

“These kids are awesome. You tell them to catch only using their hands and they are on it,” he said. “One of the teams I coach back home, you tell them to use their hands and they’re all trying to do one-hand catches. If you can’t catch with two hands, how you gonna catch with one hand?”

McCrary moved his group over to practice field goals and the cheering got even more raucous. A great chorus of ‘Oooooh’ followed the first 3-pointer.

A slim blonde girl jumped into a round of high-fives after being the first to get enough lift on the ball to carry it over the cross bar.

Nick Sorensen, safety with the Cleveland Browns, split his group into two and conducted foot work drills. The losing team had to do 25 push ups, much to the delight of the winners, who helpfully counted out each push up.

Push ups with Nick Sorensen. (Photo by Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7)

Marcel Reece, fullback with the Oakland Raiders, was also teaching foot work and speed drills to a younger group of athletes.

“Don’t worry about being fast right now, just worry about doing it right,” he yelled. “That’s it. You got it. Great job.”

He was rewarded with a huge grin from a sweaty little guy whose T-shirt was longer than his shorts.

Foot work drills with Marcel Reece. (Photo by Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7)

Mayor Billy Kenoi dropped in to observe the action and was coaxed into running a few drills.

“Man, it’s been a long time,” Kenoi said. “But that felt so good.”

Kenoi was an lineman on his Waiakea High School football team, but admitted he’s getting a little old to be tossing around the pigskin with a bunch of NFL players.

Jason Alani, a Chargers fan from Captain Cook, has won the national championship for the Boys 8-9 division of the NFL’s Punt, Pass & Kick competition.

Alani was among the winners honored Sunday during on-field award presentation during the AFC divisional playoff game between the Ravens and the Texans.

Forty young athletes from around the country competedd in the national finals Saturday in Baltimore during the weekend of the AFC Divisional Playoff Game.

Finalists competed in five age divisions at the Ravens’ team facility, with the top scorer in each group crowned national champion. All participants launch two punts, two passes and two kicks, with scores based on distance and accuracy (in feet). The best score from each activity is tabulated to determine the athlete’s total.

All youngsters advanced to the National Finals through local, sectional and team championship competitions held throughout the NFL regular season. The top four scorers in each age group from around the country qualified as national finalists.

“The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick program gives girls and boys around the country a way to stay healthy and active and to learn the basic skills of football,” said NFL senior vice president of events Frank Supovitz. “We are pleased to see so many of our young fans learning about football through this program.”

The NFL Punt, Pass & Kick program is a national skills competition for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15 to compete separately against their peers. Established in 1961, the PPK program is the oldest NFL Youth Football program.

Girls and boys in five separate age divisions (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15) compete against each other in punting, passing and place kicking in a fun and engaging forum.

The PPK program is free – both to organizers who host a local competition and to every youngster who wants to participate.

With more than 3 million boys and girls from around the country taking part in PPK competitions every year from July through January, it is one of the world’s largest youth sports participation programs.

MEDIA RELEASE

On Tuesday, January 24th 2012 NFL Football Players and NFL Cheerleaders will be holding Youth Clinics for Hawai`i Island intermediate and high school students at Kealakehe High School from 3:00–5:30 PM and Wednesday, January 25th 2012, at Keaau High School from 3:00–5:30 PM. Players and cheerleaders will also visit a local school for an assembly before the clinics. The NFL Pro Bowl Youth Clinics, now in its 10th year, is focused on motivating our youth to realize their dreams and to maximize their potential.

In the past years, players and cheerleaders from the NFL teams have come to the Big Island, to present our children with inspirational messages and positive skills training. The 2-hour clinic will feature a variety of hands-on skills and techniques for both boys and girls.

“Seeing the smiles, the excitement, and the joy on the faces of the kids – its quite an honor to be part of such a positive and inspirational event”, said Mayor Billy Kenoi, Pro Bowl Ohana Committee Member, “I cannot thank the NFL, Nat Moore, the Pro Bowl Ohana Committee, and our volunteers enough for making this event possible – each year we involve more students on Hawai`i Island – we now get to involve over 700 of our youth Island wide – our kids will remember this for the rest of their lives!”

All youth participants will also receive an NFL Pro Bowl T-shirt that will be autographed by each player and an NFL Pro Bowl sling backpack. Youth participants are selected by their respective school, however, every year there are open slots that need to be filled. Youth who are accompanied by a parent may be able to participate at a space available, first come, first served basis. Spectators are invited and welcome to attend the event.

Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7 Editor

No-one was really paying attention to the scoreboard this weekend at Kealakehe High School football stadium.

A pair of games, organized by Alumni Football USA, featured athletes who had hung up their cleats after high school, but were itching to play one more game.

Saturday evening’s game matched up Kealakehe and Konawaena, while Sunday afternoon saw Waiakea take on Honokaa. Final scores: Konawaena 24, Kealakehe 12; and Waiakea 39, Honokaa 0.

“That was so awesome. And so fun. It did bring back a lot of old memories,” said Matt Kakalia, Class of 2006. “As soon as you hit the field, you remember all those memories from high school games.”

Kakalia, who lives in Kona but suited up for Honokaa, said he was most impressed with some of the athletes who graduated from high school before he was born in 1988.

“Like, Fred Lindsey. He was great,” Kakalia said.

Fred Lindsey collects his 'oldest man of the field' medal. (Hawaii 24/7 photo by Karin Stanton)

Lindsey, Class of 1979, also suited up for Honokaa and was given a medal for being the oldest player on the field Sunday. Lindsey, who lives in Seattle, flew in especially for the game.

Saturday night’s ‘oldest honor’ went to Hano Grace, who graduated Konawaena in 1993.

After Saturday night’s game, Jerry Mareko was dirty, tired and happy.

The Konawaena 1998 graduate, who last played football in 2009 in college, said he had a blast.

“College ball was nothing like now. I got to play with my younger brother, my older brother and my cousins. These guys are my heroes. It was awesome,” he said.

Mareko, who helped organize the games on the Big Island, said another highlight was being able to earn some money for youth activities and programs.

“We’re just a bunch of muscleheads out here, but we got to raise some money, so that was really the best thing,” he said. “I’d just like to really thank everyone who came out tonight.”

Player introductions. (Hawaii 24/7 photo by Karin Stanton)

Alumni Football USA presented a check to team captain Mareko for more than $6,000. Once all the pre-sale tickets and concessions are tallied, that total is expected to near $10,000 and will be split between three Pop Warner football teams, a youth baseball team and the Kealakehe robotics program.

Bob Cazet, Hawaii site coordinator for Alumni Football USA, said he was pleased to bring the program to the Big Island.

“We had over 700 guys sign up statewide and I can guarantee we’ll have more than that next year,” Cazet said. “Once these guys get a taste of the game again, they’ll be watching the DVD and talking about it for 20 more years.”

Cazet, who has been involved in alumni games since 1985, said the athletes who return to the field do so for the love of the game and the camaraderie.

“But there is even higher reason. In high school, there is a lot of tension, now these guys are a little more mature and can enjoy it,” he said. “We can affect the community, so that’s a great plus.”

Kealakehe stadium was packed for the Saturday night game, with people standing four or five deep along the walkway and sitting in the aisles.

“I’ve never seen it like this,” Mareko said. “Totally great.”

First half of Konawaena-Kealakehe match up. (Hawaii 24/7 photo by Karin Stanton)

Pacing the walkway Saturday evening was Ed Rocha, who coached Waiakea High School football for 18 years and was anxious to get back on the sideline for the Sunday afternoon game.

“These guys surprised a lot of people just by showing up,” he said. “There are about 30 guys signed up who I coached before, plus some guys from Hilo. It’s impressive. We’re glad this got off the ground. It’s really about giving back to the schools.”

Standing in line at the concession stand Saturday evening, Keoki Rivera wanted to hurry up, get his chili-n-rice and get back to his seat.

“This is pretty crazy. It’s so good to see all my old friends lining up again,” he said.

Rivera, a Konawaena Class of 1996 alumni, said he wasn’t really rooting for either team.

“I know guys on both sides, so I don’t really care, but I can’t believe the atmosphere tonight,” he said. “It’s so great. All families and friends. I love it.”

Big Island native Mana Silva has been signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.

The Hilo-born Kamehameha High School 2006 graduate went undrafted this year, but had short stints with the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills this fall.

The NFL team announced Tuesday it had placed rookie running back DeMarco Murray (fractured ankle) and safety Barry Church (separated shoulder) on injured reserve.

To bolster the roster, the Cowboys signed Silva and veteran running back Sammy Morris, who played with Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett in Miami in 2004.

Silva, who majored in psychology at University of Hawaii, finished his career as the school’s all-time interceptions record with 14. He also earned first-team all-Western Athletic Conference honor.

A 2006 graduate of Kamehameha Schools in Keaau, Silva lettered three times in football and basketball and twice in track.

Silva is married to Keilah; they have a son, Kauahe. He has one brother and one sister and parents are Maurice and Lily-Ann Silva of Hilo.

HONOLULU – University of Hawai’i head football coach Greg McMackin announced his retirement Monday afternoon during a press conference at the Stan Sheriff Center. McMackin’s 44-year coaching career included the past four seasons as head coach of the Warriors and two different stints as UH’s defensive coordinator.

A national search for McMackin’s replacement will begin immediately. Associate head coach Rich Miano will serve as interim head coach.

“Hawai’i has meant a lot to my family and me,” McMackin said. “I appreciate Chancellor Hinshaw giving me the opportunity to be the head football coach at the University of Hawai’i. I have decided to retire from my position at this time. I believe in my players and their potential for success. In their honor, I am foregoing $500,000 in the final year of my contract which I hope will help strengthen the UH football program. I want to thank my players, coaches, staff and the good people of Hawai’i.”

“I know that Coach McMackin cares deeply for this team, his coaches and staff, the university and people of Hawai’i,” UH-Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw said. “I respect his decision to retire from this position at this time and understand that he continues to think about the best direction for his team now, as he always has. I am grateful for his many contributions and wish him and his family the very best in their future.”

“I sincerely appreciate all the contributions that Coach McMackin has made to UH football for the past four years,” UH Athletics Director Jim Donovan said. “From last year’s WAC Championship to the greatly improved APR scores, Coach Mack has accomplished so much. He set the future for UH football. I wish Coach Mack, Heather and their whole family all the best as they head into this new chapter of their lives.”

McMackin compiled a 29-25 record with Hawai’i and led the Warriors to a pair of Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl appearances in 2008 and 2010. Last season, he guided UH to a 10-win season and a share of the Western Athletic Conference championship, just the fourth in the program’s history.

McMackin was the team’s defensive coordinator in 1999 and 2007, both of which were WAC championship seasons. He’s been a part of four bowl teams with Hawai’i (1999, ’07, ’08, and ’10) among his 14 bowl appearances as a collegiate coach.

The Springfield, Ore., native has spent 32 years coaching in the collegiate ranks at Idaho, San Jose State, Stanford, Utah, Miami (Fla.,), and Texas Tech. He’s also coached professionally with the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers.

Under McMackin, UH’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) rose significantly and was among the highest in the WAC and other schools in the Western United States. He also was instrumental in establishing the bridge program at UH, allowing new student-athletes to get a head start on earning their degrees.

The graduation rate among football student-athletes was the highest in years and the program received a total of 41 academic all-WAC citations during his first three seasons as head coach. Last season Kealoha Pilares became just the third Warrior to earn first-team Academic All-America honors.

In addition, six players under McMackin were drafted in the NFL while another six signed NFL free agent contracts. Three different players earned All-America honors while the program received 29 all-WAC citations in his four seasons, including 2008 WAC defensive player of the year Solomon Elimimian.

Kamehameha Schools – Hawaii has the bragging rights after topping Keaau in the inaugural Kipimani Cup.

Saturday’s match-up saw Kamehameha capitalize on a 23-7 halftime lead and hold off Keaau for a final score of 36-21.

That means Kamehameha gets its hands on the perpetual trophy for the year and forever claim victory in the cup’s first game.

The cup was presented to the winner of a goodwill football game between Kamehameha and Keaau high schools.

Both high schools are on land once owned by W.H. Shipman, which sponsors the Kipimana Cup.

W.H. Shipman awarded $500 to each school’s booster club.

“Kipimana” is how Hawaiians referred to Shipman more than 100 years ago, and the name is used today as a street name in the Keaau area.

W.H. Shipman, Ltd. in concert with Keaau and Kamehameha-Hawaii high schools will inaugurate the Kipimana Cup Saturday, Aug. 27, to support Keaau area high school athletics.

The cup will be presented to the winner of a goodwill football game between Kamehameha and Keaau high schools at Keaau’s home field. The JV game starts at 3 p.m., with varsity kicking off around 5 p.m.

“We’re excited to be instituting this cup,” said Bill Walter, president of WHS. “Keaau already has a strong sense of community and W.H. Shipman is proud to be a longstanding part of it. The Kipimana Cup lets us celebrate Keaau — a truly great place to live and work. What better way to come together than a friendly game of football?”

The Kamehameha Schools Hawaii campus opened on former W.H. Shipman land in 2001 and serves approximately 1,120 keiki, grades K-12, and their families from Waimea to Waiohinu.

Keaau High School serves approximately 950 keiki in grades 9-12 and their families. It opened in 1998 on land that was also once owned by the W.H. Shipman Estate.

“Kipimana” is how Hawaiians referred to Shipman more than 100 years ago, and the name is used today as a street name in the Keaau area.

W.H. Shipman will award $500 to the booster club of each school. But the real prize is a perpetual trophy and official bragging rights for the winning team.

W.H. Shipman, part of the East Hawaii business community for nearly 130 years, has 17,000 acres in the Puna District and is engaged in agriculture and commercial/ industrial development and leasing. As a land steward, the company holds a long range-view to sustainability and planned development for balanced community use.

MEDIA RELEASE

Clifton Walters has been named the head coach of the Konawaena High School football team, it was announced Wednesday by Bill Trumbo, Konawaena athletic director.

Walters, who lead Kealakehe High School to the 2006 Big Island Interscholastic Federation championship in his only year at the school, has a long interscholastic coaching background in Alberta, Canada, in football and basketball.

“I’ve been out of coaching for a few years, and I’m ready to go back,” the retired businessman said. “My passion is to work with young people. That’s where I’m happiest.”

Walters coached the Lethbridge Collegiate Insitute Rams, a public high school, to 15 conference titles in 20 years. His record as a head football coach there is 260-20. He had three undefeated teams and sent 134 players to college programs.

“Our goal at Konawaena is to win a Division II league title,” Walters said. “But I also believe that we can compete at the state level. I went to all of Konawaena’s home games last year, and I truly feel there is enough talent and pride there to compete for a state title.”

Trumbo said he is excited about the future of the football program.

“Konawaena has had a long tradition of success in football and I believe Clift will return us to the days of packed houses at Julian Yates field,” Trumbo said.

Walters said his first task is to meet with the community and to let them know who he is and what he plans to do at Konawaena, which he said he has fallen in love with over the past few years.

“The people up mauka are the salt of the earth,” Walters said. “I like to put it this way: If you go to a game at Kealakehe, you get a hot dog at the concession. At Konawaena, you get beef stew served by a fireman, or fried fish cooked by a coach.”

Walters said he is also going to work on a coaching staff. “I invite anyone who has an interest to contact me or Bill at the school,” he said. “I’m also interested in seeing if any of the guys on last year’s staff are also willing to coach.”

Walters replaces Aaron Nagata, a former all-state standout at Konawaena. Nagata resigned earlier this year to pursue additional career educational opportunities.

For more information, call Clift Walters at 557-1277.

On Tuesday, January 25th 2011 NFL Football Players and NFL Cheerleaders will be holding Youth Clinics for Hawaii Island students at Kealakehe High School from 3:00–5:30 PM and Wednesday, January 26th 2011, at Keaau High School from 3:00–5:30 PM. Players and cheerleaders will also be visiting local schools for assemblies before the clinics. The NFL Pro Bowl Youth Clinics, now in its ninth year, is focused on motivating our youth to realize their dreams and to maximize their potential.

In the past years, players and cheerleaders from the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, San Diego Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks have come to the Big Island, to present our children with inspirational messages and positive skills training. The 2-hour clinic will feature a variety of hands-on skills and techniques for both boys and girls.

“Seeing the smiles, the excitement, and the joy on the faces of the kids – its quite an honor to be part of such a positive and inspirational event”, said Mayor Billy Kenoi, Pro Bowl Ohana Committee Member, “I cannot thank the NFL, Nat Moore, the Pro Bowl Ohana Committee, and our volunteers enough for making this event possible – each year we involve more students on Hawaii Island – we now get to involve over 700 of our youth Island wide – our kids will remember this for the rest of their lives!”

All youth participants will also receive an NFL Pro Bowl T-shirt that will be autographed by each player and an NFL Pro Bowl sling backpack. The public and youth not signed up for the program are welcome to attend the event. Youth participants are selected by their respective school, however, every year there are open slots that need to be filled. Youth who are accompanied by a parent may be able to participate if there are any open slots prior to the beginning of the clinic on a first come, first served basis.
