It was all cheers, applause, hugs and leis Sunday evening at Hilo International Airport when the Big Island’s newest world champions touched down.

Leading with a white and yellow banner proclaiming them the 2011 Senior League World Series baseball champions, the Hilo All Stars were welcomed home by a crowd of family, friends supporters and Mayor Billy Kenoi.

Hilo, U.S. West regional champions, capped a 15-game win streak Saturday by clobbering Tyler, Texas 11-1 in the title game in Bangor, Maine.

Hilo is the first team in series history to win the championship game by the 10-run mercy rule.

The team was led by outstanding pitching by Quintin Torres-Costa, who allowed three hits and one earned run over five innings, striking out six and walking none. However, it was Koa Matson’s three-run double to right center with two outs in the bottom of the fifth that finished of the Texas squad.

Hilo also became the first team to win the Senior League World Series in the 10-year history of the tournament, having defeated Chesterville, Va., in 2003.

Kenoi greeted the team and coach/manager Kaha Wong at the airport and declared it Hilo All Stars Senior League World Series Champions Day.

Mayor Billy Kenoi will join friends, family and supporters Sunday evening at Hilo airport to greet the World Champion Hilo All-Stars team as it returns after victory in Bangor, Maine.

The Hilo team led by manager Kaha Wong defeated Rose Capital East Little League of Tyler, Texas 11-1 in five innings for a decisive Senior League World Series victory today.

The homecoming will include a water cannon salute by the Hilo airport state fire department crews, and entertainment by the Hawaii County Band.

“Hilo and the entire State of Hawaii wants our champion athletes to know they have made us very, very proud,” Kenoi said. “Their demonstration of determination, skill and sportsmanship was unforgettable. We also want to show our aloha for the parents, coaches and volunteers who supported this world champion team.”

The team is scheduled to arrive 7:40 p.m. Sunday in Hilo on United/Continental Flight 1253 from Los Angeles.

–

Hilo shutdown its last opponent Saturday in Bangor, Maine to win the Senior League World Series and bring the crown home to the Big Island.

The 14- to 16-year-old Little Leaguers thumped Tyler, Texas 11-1 in five innings, when the game was ended because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Quintin Torres-Costa was the winning pitcher in the title game, while Koa Matson knocked out a three-run double in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

About 1,250 people were in the stands at Shawn T. Mansfield Stadium to watch the West and the Southwest champs battle it out.

Hilo, representing the West, outscored opponents 51-12 in the tournament and allowed only 2 runs in its final two games.

The team is coached/managed by Kaha Wong.

MEDIA RELEASE

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced the signing of University of Hawaii second baseman Kolten Wong, the team’s first overall selection in the 2011 First Year player draft.

Wong, 20, posted a career .358 batting average (245-for-684) with 47 doubles, 25 home runs and 145 RBI at Hawaii with a career slugging pct. of .563 and a .449 on-base pct.

A left-handed hitter, he also started games at catcher and centerfield during his time at Hawaii.

“Kolten will start his professional career right away and that is a benefit to both him and for the Cardinals,” said Cardinals Vice President of Scouting & Player Development, Jeff Luhnow. “He is a special player and our fans in Quad Cities will find that out very soon.”

The Hilo native started 57 games as a junior this season for the Rainbows and led his team in almost every offensive category during the 2011 season.

The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Wong was drafted in the 16th round of the 2008 First-Year Player draft by the Minnesota Twins, but did not sign.

“I’m excited to get my professional career started,” Wong said. “It’s always been a dream of mine to play professional baseball. Hopefully some day soon I will be playing for the Cardinals here in St. Louis.”

Wong becomes the fifth 1st round pick from the 2011 Major League Baseball draft class to have signed. He will be assigned to the Quad Cities (A) roster and is due to report Monday.

MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii Island Movers kicks off its 27th annual summer baseball season, highlighted by the 25th consecutive year that the team is making a goodwill baseball trip to Japan for Hawaii college ballplayers to experience the culture and keep their skills sharp.

Donald Takaki, the program’s founder and chairman of HawkTree International, Inc., said it’s especially vital for this year’s team to show its support to Japan and for the Movers’ players to embrace their role as goodwill ambassadors, as Japan continues its recovery from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Takaki said, “This will be the Movers’ 25th year of playing baseball in Japan, and this year will be the most important considering all that Japan and its people have gone through. Japan needs all of us to do our part to help their families and communities get their lives back to a sense of normalcy. We are going there to compete on the baseball field, to share our aloha with their people, and to let them know they can count on our support going forward.”

As part of the Movers’ goodwill efforts, five of the team’s players are from Japan, including three players from universities in Sendai, which suffered extensive earthquake and tsunami damage.

The five Japanese players will join the Movers’ roster for the road trip throughout Japan, while an all-star team from the Sendai Universities League will compete in the season-ending baseball tournament in Hawaii.

The Movers’ 30-game schedule continues through Aug. 7, including a 25-day, 17-game road trip in Japan, June 28 to July 23, to play teams in Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Kansai, Osaka, and Sapporo.

Takaki noted that the Movers’ relationships with many of the Japan teams and their support organizations go back more than 20 years. The season concludes with the 2011 Hawaii International Baseball Championship Tournament, Aug. 4-7.

Joining the Movers are three Japan teams, Sendai Universities League, Kyushu Big Six Universities League, and Nippon Sports Science University. Ninety percent of the players’ program expenses, including travel costs for the traveling squad, are being provided by Pacific Region Baseball, Inc. and other sponsors.

Richard Olsen, the team’s general manager and head coach, along with assistant coaches Galen Kitamura, Blane Muraoka, Randy Yamashiro, Mario Monico, and Ryan Monico, volunteer their time in support of the program and its mission.

“We’re very grateful to our sponsors and supporters for making this unique summer baseball experience possible for these young college men as they learn about life and develop into adults,” Takaki said.

All home games are played at Les Murakami Stadium on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Admission is free.

MEDIA RELEASE

Kekoa Lee’s selection as the Pacific West Conference Pitcher of the Year lead’s the post-season recognition for the University of Hawaii at Hilo as the Vulcans landed six All-PacWest selections, including three on the First Team and three more on the Second Team.

In addition to earning Pitcher of the Year honors, Lee also was named All-PacWest First Team as a hurler and claimed All-PacWest Second Team accolades as a DH. In 2009 he was a First Team pitcher.

This season Lee was terrific on the mound. He posted a 2-2 record with a 2.76 ERA in seven starts, registering 42 strikeouts in 42.1 innings of action. He permitted just 13 earned runs and 17 walks during the year while giving up just four extra-base hits.

At the plate Lee hit .325 in 45 games and 44 starts. He went 49 for 151 with 32 runs scored, 14 doubles, 33 RBI, 19 walks, a .450 slugging percentage and a .408 on-base mark. He tied for third in the PacWest in doubles.

UHH sophomore 3B Jonathan James (Honolulu, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) and senior OF Keoni Manago (Honolulu, HI/Roosevelt) claimed All-PacWest First Team accolades, while senior SS Bryan Patterson (Hilo, HI/Hilo) and sophomore pitcher Chris Pascual (Kapolei, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama) were named to the Second Team.

Manago wraps up his career with three straight All-PacWest First Team selections, the 2008 Freshman of the Year honor, the 2009 Player of the Year award, and the 2010 Co-Player of the Year plaque.

This season he led the PacWest in hitting with a .394 average, going 65 for 165 with 41 runs, 14 doubles, three triples, three homers, 25 RBI, 94 total bases, a .570 slugging rate, a .457 on-base average and 19 walks in 43 games and 42 starts.

In addition to being the batting champion of the PacWest, he ranked third in slugging, fourth in on-base percentage, second in base hits, third in runs scored, tied for third in doubles, tied for second in triples, tied for second in home runs, and ranked second in total bases.

James, meanwhile, had a breakout season even though his numbers may have been overshadowed by Manago’s offense. He finished fifth in batting in the PacWest after hitting .356 in 41 games and 37 starts. He went 48 for 135 with 19 runs, 20 RBI and a .439 on-base average.

Patterson hit .301 in 46 games and 45 starts, producing 41 hits, 28 runs, 30 RBI, four doubles, 23 walks and a .420 on-base mark.

Pascual went 2-2 on the mound with two saves and a 3.49 ERA in 13 appearances and two starts. He struck out 42 in 38.2 innings of action, allowing just 15 walks, 15 earned runs and a .223 opponent’s batting average.

Hawaiian Isle Athletics (HIA) Youth Baseball fielded several kids from Parker School for their Mustang Division (ages 9 and 10) of PONY League Baseball in Kona. Players included Connor Brown, Braedon Ingalls, Noah Dizol, Ian Owens, Madilyn Jardine, and Taylor Sullivan. They had an undefeated season (12-0) against Kohala and Kona and most made the Kona PONY Mustang Allstar team. Braedon Ingalls was considered the most improved player by all HIA coaches.

Parker School Allstars included Noah, Ian, Maddy and Taylor. They joined other kids from Waimea, Kona, and Kohala to form the Westside Allstars, led by HIA coaches Mel Jardine, Ivan Look, and Danrick Perreira. They worked hard everyday to be prepared to take on Hilo’s best for a spot at the State championship. They played a doubleheader at the Hilo Boys & Girls Club on Saturday June 12 against the Hilo Allstars. The first game, Westside had a late start and a couple of errors in the first inning, the pitching from both teams was outstanding, but Westside lost 7-1.

Westside rallied against Hilo for 1 more chance in the best of 3 tournament. Hilo came hitting from the start and Westside battled back with 5 RBI’s in 2 innings. The game came down to 7-6 Hilo in the last inning with 2 outs and a full count. Caden Perreira-Lau hit a bomb out to centerfield, it looked like a guarantee homerun, but Hilo’s awesome centerfielder got out there, jumped up and caught the ball! It was the best game of the year!
