Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. it may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter. For those areas – when no major waves are observed for two hours after the estimated time of arrival or damaging waves have not occurred for at least two hours then local authorities can assume the threat is passed.

A severe 8.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra at 10:38 p.m. HST. Because the epicenter is in the Indian Ocean there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. However there is a tsunami watch in effect for the Indian Ocean. DART Buoys indicate a tsunami was generated in the Indian Ocean. Check with local government agencies for alerts.
