A lava lake present within the Halema`uma`u Overlook vent during the past week resulted in night-time glow that was visible from the Jaggar Museum overlook. The lake, which is normally about 100–125 m (330–410 ft) below the floor of Halema`uma`u Crater and is visible by HVO’s Webcam, rose and fell slightly during the week in response to a series of large deflation-inflation cycles. On February 2 and 3, two large collapses of the vent crater wall triggered small explosions that threw spatter onto the rim of Halema`uma`u Crater.

On Kilauea’s east rift zone, surface lava flows were active in the upper part of the flow field, about 4.5–6 km (3–4 miles) southeast of Pu`u `O`o, over the past week. On Wednesday, February 8, these flows were 300 m (330 yards) from the northern boundary of the Royal Gardens subdivision. There are no active flows on the coastal plain, and there is no active ocean entry.

One earthquake beneath Hawai`i Island was reported felt this past week. A magnitude-2.7 earthquake occurred at 11:07 p.m., HST, on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, and was located 9 km (6 mi) southeast of Mauna Kea’s summit at a depth of 19 km (12 mi).

(Volcano Watch is a weekly article written by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.)

The U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory recently honored Hawai`i Island students who created winning posters celebrating the observatory’s 100th anniversary. The award ceremony was held during HVO’s centennial open house on January 21, 2012.

HVO, which has continuously monitored Hawaiian eruptions and earthquakes since the observatory was founded in 1912, hosted the poster contest to commemorate its centennial milestone. Because volcanic processes and scientific observation are included in Hawai`i’s 4th grade science curriculum, we targeted that grade level for the contest.

In an announcement last fall, Hawai`i Island 4th grade students were invited to create posters conveying a message about HVO’s work in monitoring Hawaiian volcanoes. Within some set guidelines, students were free to focus on the historical, scientific or cultural aspects of volcano watching—or all three—as they designed and created their posters.

We had no idea whether, or how many, students would participate in HVO’s contest, but the response far exceeded our expectations: 217 posters were submitted by students from 16 different schools around the Island.

A panel of five judges—a scientist, an educator, a retired art center director, a radio host, and a marketing manager—selected first, second, and third place winners from each of the three Hawai`i Department of Education (DOE) Complex Areas and one overall Grand Prize winner. Choosing the 10 best of 217 amazing posters was not an easy task, but through careful and thoughtful consideration of each poster, the judges eventually identified the winners.

Jyron Young, who was a student at Waiakeawaena Elementary School when he created his stunning poster, is the Grand Prize winner. While at Waiakeawaena, his teachers were Susan Lee and Ada Kubo.

The Ka`u–Kea`au–Pahoa DOE Complex Area honorees include two students from Malamalama Waldorf School: first place winner Elijah Lacks-Park and second place winner Yasmine Butterfield, both of whom are taught by Lynn Pena. Third place winner Caitlyn Long attends Na`alehu Elementary School, and her teacher is Hettie Rush.

In the Hilo–Laupahoehoe–Waiakea DOE Complex Area, the first place winner is Bryce Camacho, a Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary School student in Kim Springer’s class. Second place winner Meghan Veincent attends Keaukaha Elementary School and created her poster under the guidance of Kumu Lurline Agbayani. The third place honoree is Julianne Lee, a Waiakeawaena Elementary School student taught by Susan Lee (no relation).

The Honoka`a–Kealakehe–Kohala–Konawaena DOE Complex Area first place winner is Ava Hunter, a Waikoloa Elementary School student in Jenna Nakao’s class. The other two honorees are Honoka`a Elementary School students: second place winner Kaddison Quiocho and third place winner Jannabel Bielza. Their teacher is Cindy Sharp.

Prizes awarded to these students were selected to reflect the work of HVO—observing and documenting volcanic and earthquake activity in Hawai`i. The awards included a digital camera (grand prize), binoculars (first place), a geologic hand lens (second place), and a mini-LED microscope (third place). Each winner also received a copy of “Volcano Watching,” written by a former HVO Scientist-in-Charge, the late Bob Decker, and his wife, Barbara. All awards were donated by current and former HVO staff.

Six posters also received honorable mentions based on their artistic or thematic merit. Ribbons will be awarded to students who created these posters: Giselle Valdovinos, Holualoa Elementary; Chloe Hughes, St. Joseph Elementary; Halia Buchal, Parker Elementary; Zoey Block, Malamalama Waldorf; Keala Pule, Ka `Umeke Ka`eo; and Lexus Balinbin, Pahoa Elementary.

In addition to the individual student awards, all teachers who took part in the contest will receive a set of USGS educational materials for the benefit of every student in their classrooms.

All posters were displayed at KTA Superstores in Hilo, Kamuela, and Kailua until February 10. The 10 winning and 6 honorable mention posters can still be viewed on HVO’s website hvo.wr.usgs.gov

HVO thanks the 217 students and their teachers for participating in the contest, the judges who selected the winners, and KTA Superstores for displaying the students’ work. We also thank the public libraries in Hilo, Honoka`a, North Kohala, Kailua-Kona, Kealakekua, Na`alehu, and Pahoa for serving as drop-off points for poster submissions.

Congratulations to HVO’s centennial poster contest winners! Job well done!

Northbound motorists on Kuakini Highway are requested to use Highway should use Highway 180 to Palani Junction. Also, Hokulia Bypass will remain open until 9 p.m.

UPDATED (11:55 p.m. 2/7/12)

Firefighers answered a 2:17 p.m. alarm Tuesday (Feb 7) for a brushfire on the South side of Hualalai Road fueled by thick brush made up of tall California grass and Kiawe trees.

Strong winds blowing from the South pushed the fire to jump Hualalai Road spreading Northward. After a wind shift the fire headed towards the Queen Kaahumanu highway and jumped over to the mauka side of Nani Kailua Drive.

Over a dozen firefighting vehicles, two helicopters and 39 personnel which included volunteer and military firefighters fought the blaze.

By 3:50 p.m. firefighters had the fire contained. According to a fire dispatch report no buildings were damaged in the blaze and there were no injuries reported. The fire burned 20 acres of land and closed down Hualalai Road and Queen Kaahumanu Highway during the fire.

Firefighters are staying on the scene overnight to watch for flare-ups and hotspots in the burn area. Although roads are open motorists are advise to use caution due to fire personnel still on the scene.

Residents were evacuated from The Pines subdivision, the Regency Hualalai Retirement home and the University of the Nations. The Red Cross turned Kekuaokalani Gym into a shelter for evacuees.

The cause of the fire is undertermined and under investigation.

(Photo special to Hawaii 24/7 by Brian Powers)

Brian Powesr, of Hawaiian Images Photography & Video, shared the following blog post with Hawaii 24/7:

Glancing at the clock, I saw that it was just about nap-thirty so I headed out of my office onto the lanai and as always glanced out to see what the sea looked like only to find a dark brown-black cloud of smoke rising from somewhere down hill from my home. Instinct kicked in and so I grabbed my cell phone and my camera and headed down the hill.

As I was driving straight toward the sea I dailed 911 and told them of the fire. I arrived at the Pines in the subdivision below my neighborhood.

It was farther down hill than I thought but there was a major fire underway and no fire trucks to be seen or heard.

As I walked about looking for photos I heard my Hash name called out: “Flying Toe Jamb! Gimme a hand will ya?” It was one of my fellow Hashers trying to get a yard hose up and running in his neighbors yard. The fire was approaching rapidly and he started spraying it down.

Suddenly he turned to me and asked if I would go check on his dog next door, then more suddenly he stopped and said “No! Don’t do that, he doesn’t like strangers and would probably take your hand off!”

He then handed me the hose, patted my shoulder in his retreat and left me there with a camera in one hand, a hose in the other, a fire a couple yards in front of me and a man-eating dog coming up behind me!

Upon his return and still in possession of all my limbs I continued to wander about looking for interesting photos when I came across several homeowners wetting down their roofs in hopes of keeping the wind-blown embers from setting their homes alight.

I spotted another Hash brother who was is fireman in his mortal life and grabbed a few shots of him earning his pay.

‘Pole Slider’ is his Hash name. Get it? Fireman sliding down a pole? Funny, neither did he when he got named. Never been in a two story firehouse it would seem.

The fire jumped the road and was making its way up toward my house, so I called it a day and went home to tell the dogs all was well.

Needless to say my home was not destroyed and as far as I know no other homes were damaged either. It was an exciting way to spend an afternoon, but I can’t help but feel cheated out of my nap because of a stupid fire.

Aloha,
Brian

MEDIA RELEASE

Kilauea has experienced a long-term eruption since 1983, though scientists have actually been keeping an eye on the volcano for much longer. January 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, which stands watch over one of our planet’s most active volcanoes. Situated on the rim of Kilauea Caldera, this observatory is the oldest volcano monitoring station in the United States.

The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite observed the volcano on January 28, 2012. Shown here are two natural-color views: a close-up of the Kilauea Caldera and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, and a wide-area view showing Mauna Ulu and Pu’u ’O’o. Within the Kilauea Caldera lies Halema’uma’u Crater. A small plume of water vapor emerges from this crater and blows toward the southwest.

The founding of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is generally identified as January 17, 1912, when geologist Thomas A. Jaggar, Jr., took over the continuous observations of Kilauea. In the decade before Jaggar set up shop, nearly 200,000 people died from earthquakes and volcanoes. In the wake of a devastating eruption at Mount Pelée in 1902, the National Geographic Society sponsored a volcano-observing expedition, and Jaggar was one of the participants. He soon concluded that, rather than studying the damage caused by eruptions, scientists would do more good to identify the precursors. On a trip through Hawaii, he negotiated with local businessmen and secured financial support for an observatory. In 1911, he hired volcanologist Frank Perret to monitor the volcano, then took over observations in January 1912.

Jaggar immediately brought detailed documentation to the observatory, and soon expanded the activities beyond his own observations. The installation of seismometers provided evidence of the link between earthquakes and volcanism. In the 1950s, the observatory installed tiltmeters to help measure surface deformation caused by the movement of magma below the surface. Researchers at the observatory collected gas samples in 1912—some of the earliest high-temperature volcanic gas samples ever collected—and drilled into a lava lake in the 1980s to better understand how volcanic rocks crystallize.

In 2012, a century after its founding, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory hosts 25 scientists and support personnel, along with students and volunteers. It tracks the activity of Kilauea, Mauna Loa, and other volcanoes in the Hawaiian Islands, as well as the associated earthquakes.

MEDIA RELEASE

NASA Renames Earth-Observing Mission in Honor of Satellite Pioneer

WASHINGTON — NASA has renamed its newest Earth-observing satellite in honor of the late Verner E. Suomi, a meteorologist at the University of Wisconsin who is recognized widely as “the father of satellite meteorology.” The announcement was made Jan. 24 at the annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society in New Orleans.

NASA launched the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Preparatory Project, or NPP, on Oct. 28, 2011, from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. NPP was renamed Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership, or Suomi NPP. The satellite is the first designed to collect critical data to improve short-term weather forecasts and increase understanding of long-term climate change.

“Verner Suomi’s many scientific and engineering contributions were fundamental to our current ability to learn about Earth’s weather and climate from space,” said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington.” Suomi NPP not only will extend more than four decades of NASA satellite observations of our planet, it also will usher in a new era of climate change discovery and weather forecasting.”

The Suomi NPP mission is a bridge between NASA’s Earth Observing System satellites to the next-generation Joint Polar Satellite System, or JPSS, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) program. JPSS is the civilian component of the former National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS), which was reorganized by the Obama Administration in 2010.

“The new name now accurately describes the mission,” said Michael Freilich, director of the Earth Science Division in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. “Suomi NPP will advance our scientific knowledge of Earth and improve the lives of Americans by enabling more accurate forecasts of weather, ocean conditions and the terrestrial biosphere. The mission is the product of a partnership between NASA, NOAA, the Department of Defense, the private sector and academic researchers.”

Verner Suomi pioneered remote sensing of Earth from satellites in polar orbits a few hundred miles above the surface with Explorer 7 in 1959, and geostationary orbits thousands of miles high with ATS-1 in 1966. He was best known for his invention of the “spin-scan” camera which enabled geostationary weather satellites to continuously image Earth, yielding the satellite pictures commonly used on television weather broadcasts. He also was involved in planning interplanetary spacecraft missions to Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Suomi spent nearly his entire career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where in 1965 he founded the university’s Space Science and Engineering Center with funding from NASA. The center is known for Earth-observing satellite research and development. In 1964, Suomi served as chief scientist of the U.S. Weather Bureau for one year. He received the National Medal of Science in 1977. He died in 1995 at the age of 79.

“It is fitting that such an important and innovative partnership pays tribute to a pioneer like Verner Suomi,” said Mary Kicza, assistant administrator for NOAA’s Satellite and Information Service. “Suomi NPP is an extremely important mission for NOAA. Its advanced instruments will improve our weather forecasts and understanding of the climate and pave the way for JPSS, our next generation of weather satellites.”

Suomi NPP currently is in its initial checkout phase before starting regular observations with all of its five instruments. Commissioning activities are expected to be completed by March. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., manages the Suomi NPP mission for the Earth Science Division of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. The JPSS program provides the satellite ground system and NOAA provides operational support.

This movie filmed by the USGS/HVO crew shows vigorous spattering along the south margin of the Halemaumau lava lake. Lava, upwelling in the northern portion of the lake (out of view), slowly migrates to this southern margin where it sinks back into the conduit.

A lava lake present within the Halema`uma`u Overlook vent during the past week resulted in night-time glow that was visible from the Jaggar Museum overlook. The lake, which is normally about 100–125 m (330–410 ft) below the floor of Halema`uma`u Crater and visible by HVO’s Webcam, rose and fell slightly during the week in response to a series of large deflation-inflation cycles. It reached a relatively high level this past week, due to summit inflation, but was still 80 m (260 ft) below the crater floor.

On Kilauea’s east rift zone, surface lava flows were active in the upper part of the flow field, about 3.5 km (2.2 miles) southeast of Pu`u `O`o, over the past week. The flow field on the coastal plain remains inactive after activity stalled there a month ago, and there is no active ocean entry. Occasional short lava flows and a small lava pond have been observed over the past week within Pu`u `O`o crater.

Two earthquakes beneath Hawai`i Island were reported felt this past week. A magnitude-4.7 earthquake occurred at 4:36 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2012, HST, and was located 8 km (5 mi) south of Pu`u `O`o Crater at a depth of 8 km (5 mi). A magnitude-2.0 earthquake occurred at 00:24 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24, and was located 1 km (1 mi) northwest of Pu`ulena Crater at a depth of 1 km (1 mi).

By Paul Dagdag | Special to Hawaii 24/7

I have read, and have been told, that the likeness of a woman may appear anywhere within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This was a random shot taken in a hurry to move out of the way of a bus pulling into the steam vents area. Never looked at the photos until I got home the next day. Open to your imagination. I see what I see.

Karin Stanton | Hawaii 24/7 Editor

Dominic Yagong has announced his intention to run for mayor in this year’s election.

Mayor Billy Kenoi, 43, is nearing the end of his first term and although he has not announced his plans, he is widely expected to run for re-election. Also, former mayor Harry Kim, 72, perviously has said he may jump into the race, but has made no formal announcement.

Yagong, who first was elected to the council in 1996 and has served a total of six terms on the council, said he consulted with his family and close friends before making the decision.

“We made the decision to pull the trigger just recently,” he said, Saturday morning at his family home in Honokaa.

He said he had been considering a second run for the mayor’s seat for about two years. At that time, the council and the mayor was struggling with the budget severely impacted by the economic downturn.

That coincided with a council shuffle that ended Yagong’s time as Finance Committee chairman.

Yagong, 52, noted that during his 12 years on the council he has served as chairman of ‘just about every committee’ and currently is the council chairman.

He served on the County Council from 1996-2002, where he served as chairman of the Public Works and Parks Committee and chairman of the Environmental Management Committee.

In 2004, he was unsuccessful in an attempt to unseat incumbent Mayor Harry Kim. He announced his candidacy just eight weeks before the primary and had limited funding at his disposal.

He returned to the County Council in 2006 and was re-elected in 2008 and 2010.

During Saturday’s announcement, Yagong also said he was grateful for the support of his family and North Hawaii constituents.

As mayor, Yagong said he will look to steer the county in a different direction, specifically mentioning that he would seek public-private partnership to supplement county programs

“When you take a look at where we are, we’re going through probably the most difficult economic times that we’ve ever gone through,” he said. “I truly believe that right now in history of Hawaii County, I believe I’m the right man at the right time and in order for us to move in the direction that we need to go that we do need to have a change in leadership.”

He noted that taxpayers are not happy with the way state and federal governments are being run and that Hawaii County needs to look for reforms and transparency to restore faith in government

“We’re going to have to stop doing the things they way we’ve always done it,” he said. “We’re kind of stuck in a rut and we need to get out of that. You need to have someone who is willing to go against the grain.”

Yagong said he will bring an independent spirit to the county’s top spot.

“I have a lot of institutional knowledge. I bring a very independent view to how things need to be done,” he said. “My experience on county council brings a very good thing to the table. Certainly there is no book that tells you how to do it.”

He pointed to the expense of operating county government and union contracts.

“We as a county are unionized. We’ve got to have courage and the guts to stand up and try to make things to a point where we make decisions that will benefit the people. That fortitude is not easy,” he said. “That also means being able to represent the taxpayer at the collective bargaining table.”

Yagong said his campaign will be driven by island residents.

“I really want to make this a grassroots campaign,” he said.

According to the latest campaign finance reports, which date to July 1, Kenoi had a balance of $33,525, while Yagong had nothing. The next state Campaign Spending Commission deadline is Jan. 31.

Yagong currently is employed by Food Pantry Ltd. as district manager overseeing 12 business operations in Oceanview, Pahoa, Waikoloa, South Kohala, and North and South Kona. He plans to resign to concentrate on his campaign.

A Big Island sports enthusiast, he is known as the “Voice of the Honokaa Dragons” broadcasting sporting events for more than 20 years.

Born and raised in Honokaa, he still lives in the town with wife Hilda, children Chelsea, Jeremy, Rylee and Angellee and granddaughter, Jada.

The primary election is Aug. 11, 2012. The candidate filing filing period runs Wednesday, Feb. 1 through Tuesday, June 5.

The moon turns full tonight at 9:30 p.m. Sunday (Jan 8) over Hawaii. The King Kamehameha I statue stands in the moonlight in Hilo.

There are four well known statues of King Kamehameha I: The original King Kamehameha I statue is in Kapaau, Kohala which was originally commissioned for Honolulu but was lost at sea then recovered. The statue in Honolulu at the Judiciary building (the statue was a replacement for the original lost at sea). The statue in Hilo pictured above and a statue in the U.S. Capitol.

There is a fifth statue of separate design by Herb Kane which is displayed at the Grand Wailea Resort in Maui.

(Volcano Watch is a weekly article written by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.)

This week marks the occasion of the 1,000th published Volcano Watch article. For nearly two decades, these articles, written predominantly by the staff at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), have appeared in local newspapers and on HVO’s Web site.

Volcano Watch articles have covered such diverse topics as the activity of the volcanoes in our backyard to those in the outer reaches of our solar system, earthquakes and tsunami activity, monitoring methods, natural hazards, and volcanoes’ impacts on the environment and society. The first article, written in 1991, described the eruptive activity at that time and a new technique for measuring erupted lava volume. Today’s article uses the theme of 1,000 to highlight a few of the monitoring and activity changes that have occurred over the period of the volcano watch articles.

For less than 1,000 dollars, HVO scientists can now build digital time-lapse camera systems, which can be positioned to capture dynamic volcanic events around the clock. These systems, first deployed in 2004, act as surrogate eyes, and are the source of the time-lapse movies that appear on the HVO Web site (hvo.wr.usgs.gov/). Volcano aficionados can view vent development, overflows, and collapses, fountaining and gas pistoning events, and coastal phenomena, such as bubble bursts, tube breakouts, and delta collapses. Time-lapse cameras are easily deployed, offering an inexpensive alternative to Webcams. They have aided in the understanding of volcanic processes and helped scientists and land managers assess local hazards and risk.

While “power to the people” has been a familiar rallying cry for decades, getting power for many volcano monitoring instruments has become easier over time. Since instruments must sometimes be carried significant distances over remote, unstable, or hot volcanic terrain, sufficient power to run them is an important consideration. The miniaturization of computers and innovative use of technology has enabled welcomed breakthroughs in volcano monitoring equipment since the writing of the first volcano watch articles.

For instance, volcanic sulfur dioxide gas can be used as a signature for tracking the ascent and eventual eruption of magma. Formerly, a spectroscopic instrument that weighed around 1,000 ounces (approximately 60 pounds or 28 kg) and used more than 1,000 milliamps (1 amp) of power from a deep-cycle car battery or AC power from a generator was used to measure the amount of this gas.

A new instrument that uses a charge-coupled device (CCD) for detecting ultraviolet light weighs less than five pounds and runs on the power from a sub-notebook computer for hours at a time. This instrument has improved our understanding of gas emissions and impacts by enabling rapid deployment and increasing measurement frequency.

The dynamic nature of Kilauea can be highlighted by rolling back increments of 1,000 in time. The nine-year-old east rift eruption had a major vent location shift 1,000 weeks ago (19 years). The Kupaianaha vent, which had been active since 1986, stopped erupting, and activity returned uprift to Pu`u `O `o, the original site of the 1983 east rift eruption and the current locus of east rift activity.

The current summit eruption, which began in early 2008, paused for a period of several weeks as it neared the end of the calendar year 1,000 days ago (2.7 years).

Within the last 1,000 hours (17 days), the active lava pond within Pu`u O`o has become perched well above the crater floor. Due to pond overflows and uplift, the crater floor is less than 30 m (100 ft) below the east rim of Pu`u `O`o.

Within the last 1,000 minutes (17 hours) of this writing, 5 earthquakes, all of magnitude less than 2, were located beneath Kilauea Volcano.

What might imaginary scientists writing Volcano Watch articles from the past have documented? An article from 1,000 years ago might have mentioned the smooth profile of the summit of Mauna Loa (the summit caldera formed only 600-750 years ago). An article from 1,000 decades ago (10,000 years) might have highlighted the prevalence of active surface flows (98 percent of Mauna Loa has been resurfaced with lava since then). An article from 1,000 centuries ago might have touted the fact that the youthful Kilauea had finally grown above sea level (50,000-100,000 years ago), setting the stage for our current era of volcano watching.

Rain and hail video special to Hawaii 24/7 by @robmad87

By Hawaii 24/7 Staff

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the Big Island until 5:30 p.m.

At 2:30 p.m. weather radar showed several areas of heavy rain developing over leeward and interior portions of the Big Island. The weather system is nearly stationary. The advisory includes, but is not limited to: Kailua-Kona, Honaunau, Milolii and Pohakuloa Training Area.

People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. Ponding of water and reduced visibility will make driving hazardous. Do not try to cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot.

The advisory may be extended past 5:30 p.m. if heavy rain continues.

More than 80 entries marched Saturday evening along Alii Drive ringing in the season. The Kona Christmas Parade included more than 1,800 people, as well as a sprinkling of dogs, miniature horses and something that looked like a Yeti.

Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and the Ginch also made an appearance.

The Kona Christmas Parade Committee has announced the award winners for the 27th annual Christmas Parade.

Parade chairwoman Barbara Kossow thanked everyone who marched in the parade, the sponsors, the volunteers and the thousands who lined the streets to make the 2011 Kona Christmas Parade such a success.

Awardees may pick up their certificates at the mayor’s office at the West Hawaii Civic center, beginning Dec. 14.

For further information, call Kossow at 323-4448.

Early morning skywatchers in Hawaii were treated to a beautiful total lunar eclipse overhead Saturday (Dec 10).

Cloud cover over the Big Island may have prevented many lunar eclipse watchers from seeing the event or gave them glimpses of the eclipse when clouds did part.

The Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station at 9,300 was well above the cloud cover and had most people arriving after the start of the partial eclipse at 1:33 a.m. with the thermometer at the station read 30ºF and a brisk cold breeze made for chilly conditions for visitors.

January 2012 is just around the corner, and staff at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) are busily preparing for the many public events planned for Hawai`i Island’s 3rd annual Volcano Awareness Month and, more importantly, for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of HVO’s founding.

In 2010, January was proclaimed “Volcano Awareness Month” by Hawai`i County Mayor Billy Kenoi. For the past two years, HVO, in cooperation with Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park and the University of Hawai`i at Hilo, has held talks, hikes, and other informative programs to promote the importance of understanding the volcanoes on which we live. Similar events will be offered in 2012.

The New Year will be a special one for HVO, which will celebrate its centennial milestone—100 years of continuous volcano monitoring in Hawai`i—with an Open House on Saturday, January 21, 2012. Hawai`i residents and visitors are welcome to tour the observatory, which is not ordinarily open to the public, to see how volcanoes and earthquakes are monitored. HVO staff will also provide demonstrations and hands-on activities about Hawai`i’s volcanoes and their work.

A complete schedule, including dates, times, locations, and brief descriptions of the Volcano Awareness Month programs and Centennial Open House, is posted on HVO’s website (hvo.wr.usgs.gov). For now, here’s a synopsis of upcoming events:

HVO scientists will present weekly “After Dark in the Park” programs in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, beginning with an update on recent activity at Pu`u `O`o on Kilauea’s east rift zone on January 3, the 29th anniversary of the ongoing eruption. The Tuesday evening programs on January 10, 17, 24, and 31, will include an update on Kilauea’s summit eruption in Halema`uma`u Crater, the story of HVO’s first 100 years, the eruptive history and current status of Mauna Loa, and information about Kilauea’s gas emissions and vog (volcanic air pollution), respectively.

A series of Thursday evening talks at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo on January 5, 12, 19, and 25 will be presented by current and former HVO scientists. Their presentations will cover a variety of interesting topics: Kilauea Volcano’s explosive past; how HVO tracks fissure eruptions, lava flows, and other volcanic activity; the impact of lava flows on the Kalapana area over the past 35 years; and the history of large earthquakes in Hawai`i and how HVO has monitored seismic activity during the past century.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-59944" title="19120712_HawaiianGazette-duke" src="http://www.hawaii247.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/19120712_HawaiianGazette-duke-236x300.jpg" alt="The year Hawaiian Volcano Observatory was founded Duke Kahanamoku was wowing the world at the 1912 Olympics. From the May 21, 1912 Hawaiian Gazette.

In West Hawai`i, a talk on January 11 at Kealakehe High School will provide an overview of what’s happening on all of Hawai`i’s active volcanoes. Another Kona talk, which will be held on February 8 at the Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park amphitheater, will focus on Mauna Loa’s eruptive history and current status.

HVO scientists will be featured speakers at Lyman Museum in Hilo over the next three months. The topics addressed in these talks include what HVO scientists have learned during the observatory’s 100-year-long history (on December 19), tracking volcanic activity on Kilauea and Mauna Loa (on January 23), and explosive eruptions at Kilauea (on February 27).

Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park will also participate in Volcano Awareness Month through weekly ranger-guided hikes in the park throughout January. These hikes will take park visitors through Kilauea Iki Crater (Sundays), to Mauna Ulu (Mondays), into Thurston Lava Tube (Wednesdays), around the Pu`uloa petroglyph field (Thursdays), along Devastation Trail (Fridays), and down to the floor of Kilauea’s caldera (Saturdays). The non-profit Friends of Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park group is offering a guided hike to Mauna Iki on January 29.

Island residents and visitors can enjoy volcano-inspired exhibits celebrating HVO’s centennial at the Lyman Museum (December 9, 2011–March 31, 2012), at the East Hawai`i Cultural Center in Hilo (January 6–28, 2012), and at the Volcano Art Center in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park (January 7–February 19, 2012).

As you can see, January 2012 promises to be a busy, but also fun and engaging, month for HVO staff, as well as for Hawai`i Island residents and visitors wishing to learn more about Hawai`i’s volcanoes. We encourage you to check out the complete “Schedule of Events” posted on the HVO website (hvo.wr.usgs.gov)—and hope to see you at one or more Volcano Awareness Month programs and at our Centennial Open House.

A lava lake was present within the Halemaumau Overlook vent over the past week, resulting in night-time glow that was visible from the Jaggar Museum overlook. The lake, which is about 100 m (330 ft) below the floor of Halemaumau and visible by Webcam, rose and fell slightly during the week in response to back-to-back deflation-inflation cycles.

Eruptive activity on Kilauea’s east rift zone was restricted to surface flows about 5.5 km (3.4 miles) southeast of Pu‘u ‘O‘o and a few short flows on the Pu‘u ‘O‘o crater floor. The short flows were intermittent while the more distant flows traveled through a lava tube that is fed by the September 21 fissure on the upper east flank of the Pu‘u ‘O‘o cone.

Four earthquakes beneath Hawai`i Island were reported felt this past week. A magnitude-2.6 earthquake occurred at 6:17 p.m., HST, on Thursday, November 17, 2011, and was located 4 km (2 mi) north of Captain Cook at a depth of 11 km (7 mi). A magnitude-2.8 earthquake occurred at 3:06 p.m. on Friday, November 18, and was located 15 km (9 mi) northwest of Na`alehu at a depth of 5 km (3 mi). A magnitude-4.0 earthquake occurred at 10:17 a.m. on Sunday, November 20, and was located 7 km (4 mi) northwest of Mauna Loa summit at a depth of 12 km (7 mi). A magnitude-3.8 earthquake occurred at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23, and was located 9 km (6 mi) southwest of Na`alehu at a depth of 41 km (25 mi).

MEDIA RELEASE

Describing the area as a “pu‘uhonua” for families, Hawai‘i County Mayor Billy Kenoi and other dignitaries untied two maile leis Friday morning, signaling the opening of an affordable housing project and a 12-acre community park in Waikoloa.

Kamakoa Nui, which targets first-time home buyers who make a little less or slightly more than the area median income, will eventually consist of about 1,200 fee-simple homes and rentals on 268 acres just north of Waikoloa Elementary School.

“We wanted to create a healthy community for everyone, but most of all for families with young children,” said Mayor Kenoi, who was joined by county Office of Housing Administrator Steve Arnett and his staff in celebrating the blessing of the new community. “We wanted a puuhonua, a safe haven.”

About 50 people, including government officials and private sector representatives, celebrated with the county under blue skies, brisk winds, and the island of Maui dominating the sweeping views from this community, which will feature three-bedroom single-family residences and two- and three-bedroom bungalows.

About a half an hour prior to Pastor Sonny Shimaoka’s blessing of the $44 million Kamakoa Nui, the same group celebrated the opening of a new public playground a few hundred yards away from the set of four model homes which will serve as a sales area.

Homes will range from $240,000 to $325,000. Sales of the first increment of about two dozen homes should begin next month and will be marketed by Aldrich and Associates.

But Mayor Kenoi said he asked the Office of Housing staff to build the park before any homes were occupied. “This is where our kids get away from gangs and drugs,” said Mayor Kenoi. “Instead of inviting our families to live here and then building a park, I said let’s build the park first; let’s build a strong and safe community and then invite our families to live here.”

Arnett said Kamakoa Nui was handed to the Kenoi Administration three years ago “under a dark cloud” with the project stalled, under legal scrutiny and with much higher projected home prices.

“Our group spent countless hours trying to make the homes more affordable,” he said, crediting his staff of (East Hawaii supervisor) Jeremy McComber, (housing specialists) Dan Russell and Mike Prinslow and (private secretary) Annie Bailey with finding a way to cut costs.

Arnett said Les Isemoto from Isemoto Contracting also cooperated by staying mobilized while the project team was reorganized. “The end result is that the project came in on time and slightly under budget.”

Mayor Kenoi said the Office of Housing has succeeded in filling many gaps in West Hawai‘i’s housing inventory. Along with the affordable Kamakoa Nui, the county will next week open the doors to the $12.4 million Kaloko Transitional Housing Project, with 12 units to get homeless families off the streets, and 28 units for low-income households.

Last year, the $1.8-million West Hawai‘i Emergency Shelter was opened, providing 30 beds for homeless men and women. Mayor Kenoi also cited the Lokahi Apartments, affordable rentals developed by Pacific Housing Advisors.

“I told the people at Housing that at the end of the day, let’s see if we can make a difference at every part of the housing spectrum in West Hawai‘i,” said Mayor Kenoi. “And they delivered.”

To qualify, buyers should live within a 30-mile radius of Kamakoa Nui and have an income between 70-120 percent of the area median income (AMI). Potential buyers must also live in the homes and cannot have owned a home within the last three years.
To discourage speculation and help to keep the units affordable, owners who re-sell their units at Kamakoa Nui within 15 years of their initial purchase will be required to share any windfall profits from the re-sales with the county. After 15 years, all restrictions on re-sales are satisfied.

MEDIA RELEASE

Parker School’s 12th annual George Heneghan Fun Run took place Sunday (Nov 6) in Waimea. 91 runners and their supporters turned out for the early morning event from which all proceeds benefit Parker School’s athletic program. Both the 1K and 5K race runners began and finished their loops at the Parker Lower School campus.

The event was established in memory of Hawaii architect George Heneghan, who was also an accomplished athlete, teacher and coach. He coached cross-country and track at Parker from 1992-1998.

Parker School extends its gratitude to all the participants, volunteers and sponsors, particularly lead sponsor Dr. John Stover, for making this event possible and a success.
