HawaiianTel outage between Waikoloa and Naalehu due to cable cut is repaired

Hawaiian Telcom technicians completed splicing more than 500 feet of fiber cable, restoring all services to impacted customers just before 7:30 p.m. tonight. Hawaiian Telcom again thanks its customers for their patience and understanding during this emergency service outage.

Hawaiian Telcom Kona Fiber Cut UPDATE 5:45 p.m.

Hawaiian Telcom technicians have placed the new cable and begun splicing, already restoring service to some customers. All customers are estimated to have services restored by 8 p.m. tonight. Hawaiian Telcom thanks its customers for their patience and understanding.

Hawaiian Telcom customers are experiencing an outage due to a cable cut which is affecting customers between Waikoloa and Naalehu. The outage is affecting residential and business telephone, internet, cellphone and 911 service. The outage may include some isolated areas and other parts of the Big Island. If you are in need of assistance and don’t have phone service visit your nearest police or fire station.

HawaiianTel Update

At about 1 p.m. today, alarms triggered in Hawaiian Telcom’s 24/7 Network Operations Center, indicating a service issue in Kona. Upon further investigation, a fiber break was discovered on Mamalahoa Highway near the intersection to the Daniel K. Inouye Highway. A contractor transporting a grader snagged and severed a 36-strand fiber cable.

Hawaiian Telcom landline telephone and Internet are out of service in the Kona area extending from Waikoloa to Pahala, affecting approximately 20,000 phone and 5,500 Internet customers. Wireless carriers may also be impacted.

Hawaiian Telcom teams from both Hilo and Kona are engaged on a restoration plan, which will require placing more than 500 feet of cable and 72 individual splices. An update will be shared as more information becomes available.

    Yes, Can be a problem, most credit card machines dont operate, when the phone is out. I wonder when the eta of service…?
