Salvation Army truck set ablaze in suspicious Kailua-Kona fire

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in connection with a suspicious vehicle fire in Kailua-Kona.

Shortly after midnight Thursday (December 8) police received a report of a vehicle fire on the 74-5500 block of Kaiwi Street. Arriving officers found a Salvation Army delivery truck’s rear storage area fully engulfed in flames. Fire Department personnel were on scene extinguishing the fire and kept it contained to the truck’s storage area. Damages were estimated at $15,000.

The case is classified as second-degree arson.

Police are looking for a “well-dressed” Caucasian man who was in the area shortly before the fire was reported. They ask anyone with information about this case to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers is a volunteer program run by ordinary citizens who want to keep their community safe. Crime Stoppers doesn’t record calls or subscribe to caller ID.
