Fire burns unpermitted home in Hawaiian Paradise Park Wednesday (Dec 7)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 4:47 a.m. alarm Wednesday (Dec 7) for a structure fire on 29th Avenue (Poni Moi Ave) in Hawaiian Paradise Park in Puna.

Crews arrived to find a 30-by-30 foot single story unpermitted wooden home with a metal roof engulfed in flames. Firefighters had the fire under control by 5:02 a.m. and it was declared out at 5:38 a.m.

A 35-year-old woman living in the structure which had no electricity and was uninsured as able to escape without harm. A male resident was reported but not found in the structure. The Red Cross is assisting the woman’s immediate emergency needs for food, shelter and clothing.

The loss in the fire was estimated to be $40,000. A roadblock was in place on 29th Avenue during firefighting operations. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
