Crash closes Mamalahoa Hwy near Teshima’s Restaurant, both lanes now open

The Hawai’i Police Department reports that The Mamalahoa Hwy at the Route 180 Junction near Teshimas in Honalo, South Kona is now open in both directions. This roadway was previously closed due to a downed utility pole from an earlier traffic accident as utility crews made repairs. The Hawai’i Police Department expresses their thanks to all motorists for their understanding and patience while utility crews addressed this issue. The Hawai’i Police Department asked all motorist to continue to drive with Aloha.

The Hawai’i Police Department reports that the North bound lane is now open on the Old Mamalahoa Hwy at the Teshima Junction. Vehicles headed south bound are being re-routed down the Kamehameha III Roadway towards the Hokulia by-pass Road. This temporary closure is due to a traffic accident that resulted in a utility pole being struck and severely damaged last night at about 12:30 a.m. and this vehicle caught on fire. The twenty four year old male driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was treated for his injuries at the Kona Community Hospital. The Old Mamalahoa Hwy is expected to be open at about 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Motorist are reminded to use caution while crews conduct repairs.

The Old Māmālahoa Highway (Route 180) in Honalo, South Kona, remains closed in both directions at the Teshima junction because of a downed utility pole. Traffic is being rerouted down Kamehameha III Road.
