Police DUI stats for the week of September 26 – October 2, 2016

During the week of September 26, 2016, through October 2, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 818 DUI arrests compared with 791 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.4 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,039 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,160 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.4 percent.

So far this year, there have been 19 fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (three of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 22 fatalities, compared with 12 fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 15 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 58.3 percent for fatal crashes and 46.7 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
