Helicopter makes emergency landing in Kohala Mountain Range

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 9:26 a.m. alarm Tuesday (Oct 4) to the Pu‘u O Umi Natural Area Reserve area in the Kohala Mountains for helicopter and crew which made an emergency landing.

The fire department’s Chopper One conducted the primary search due to the inaccessible area for ground crews. The private contract helicopter was found in a marshy, light brush area on the north flank of the Kohala Mountain Range, north northwest of Waimea town in or around the Pu‘u O Umi Natural Area Reserve.

The pilot and two passengers were uninjured in the emergency landing. The helicopter, a model similar to a Hughes 500E/MD 500E, sustained damage to the main and tail rotor blades but landed upright on its landing skids.

The pilot and two passengers were airlifted to safety.

There were no injuries in the rescue operation. The cause of the emergency landing was not reported by fire dispatch.
