School closures due to Hurricane Madeline Wednesday (Aug 31)

The natural-color image above is a composite built from two overpasses by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite on August 29, 2016. At the time, Hurricane Madeline and Hurricane Lester were both hovering between category 3 and 4 storms. University of Hawaii

All University of Hawaiʻi facilities on Hawaiʻi Island will be closed for all students and non-essential personnel starting tomorrow, Wednesday, August 31, in advance of Hurricane Madeline.

This includes:

  • UH Hilo
  • HawaiÊ»i Community College
  • HawaiÊ»i Community College–Pālamanui
  • Ê»Imiloa Astronomy Center
  • North HawaiÊ»i Education and Research Center
  • Hale Pohaku–Onizuka Center for International Astronomy and food and lodging facilities
  • All UH Mānoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) facilities on HawaiÊ»i Island
  • All UH Mānoa Institute for Astronomy (IfA) facilities on HawaiÊ»i Island

Although these closures only affect Hawaiʻi Island (at this time), the entire UH community is urged to stay vigilant and follow the National Weather Service, other official agencies and local media for the latest weather news.

Hawaii Public Schools

With Hurricane Madeline expected to maintain its strength as it approaches the state, the Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) will close public schools on Hawaii Island on Wednesday, Aug. 31 and Thursday, Sept. 1. Closures are being made in anticipation of severe weather. All other schools in other counties will remain open until further notice.

Additionally, all Hawaii Island inter-scholastic athletic events and student activities are canceled on Wednesday and Thursday.

Many HIDOE schools serve as emergency shelters; however, County Civil Defense agencies have determined which schools are activated shelters.

Hawaii County designated the following schools as activated shelters starting today at 5 p.m.:

  • Hilo High
  • Honokaa High
  • Kalanianaole Elementary and Intermediate
  • Ka‘u High
  • Keaau High
  • Kealakehe High
  • Kohala High
  • Konawaena High
  • Laupahoehoe Public Charter School
  • Mountain View Elementary
  • Pahoa High
  • Waiakea High
  • Waikoloa Elementary
  • Waimea Intermediate
