Flash Flood Watch

The Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through this afternoon of Wednesday (Aug 24).

Deep tropical moisture will continue to produce heavy downpours and a chance of thunderstorms through late this afternoon. With streams remaining elevated and the ground already saturated from recent heavy rains in many areas there will be an elevated risk for flash flooding.

Flood Advisory

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory until 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (Aug 24) for parts of Hawaii Island.

At 2:27 p.m. weather radar indicated nearly stationary moderate to heavy showers along the lower leeward slopes of Hawaii Island from Hawaiian Ocean View Estates to Puuanahulu. rain falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour will lead to nuisance flooding.

Locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Honaunau, Kainaliu, Kalaoa, Honalo, Kahaluu-Keauhou, Kealakekua and Holualoa.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Excessive runoff may cause rockslides and mudslides in steep terrain.

Debris in streams and gulches may clog bridges and culverts resulting in flooding outside normal water channels causing damage.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

This watch and advisory could be extended should heavy rains continue.

A record rainfall of 7.15 inches occurred Tuesday (Aug 23) at the Hilo International Airport. This breaks, and nearly doubles, the old daily record of 3.59 inches set in 1982 for August 23rd.
