Flash Flood Watch

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Watch until midnight Tuesday (Aug 23).

Deep tropical moisture will continue to produce heavy downpours and a chance of thunderstorms over Hawaii Island through at least the evening. With the ground already saturated in many areas from heavy rains during the past couple of days there will be an elevated risk for flash flooding.

The greatest flood threat for leeward areas will be during the afternoon and early evening hours. The threat for flooding will persist longer over windward areas, possibly requiring the watch to be extended through the night.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is very dangerous.

This advisory is for all of Hawaii Island.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Excessive runoff may cause rockslides and mudslides in steep terrain.

Debris in streams and gulches may clog bridges and culverts resulting in flooding outside normal water channels causing damage.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

The advisory may be extended if heavy rains continue

A record rainfall of 4.04 inches was set in Hilo Monday (Aug 22). This breaks the old record of 2.99 inches set in 1982.
