Body found floating in ocean off Honolii Beach Park Tuesday (Aug 16)

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 1:08 p.m. alarm Tuesday (Aug 8) to the Honolii Beach area for a body reported floating offshore.

Crews in Rescue Boat 2 met with a boater of a 13′ Boston Whaler who reported the body about 0.7 miles offshore of Honolii Beach. The body was found floating about 15 feet away from the Boston Whaler in the open ocean. Firefighters loaded the body onboard the rescue boat and transported it to the Wailoa Boat Ramp in Hilo where it was turned over to police.

Police are conducting an investigation.

Hawaii Island police have initiated a coroner’s inquest case in connection with a body found floating off the Hāmākua Coast.

At 1:11 p.m. Tuesday (August 16), police received a report of a body floating about a mile north of Honolii Point.

Fire Department personnel recovered a male body, which was taken to Hilo Medical Center. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Police have not identified the man, described as Caucasian, slim, in his mid-30s with red medium-length hair and a red goatee.
