Medical examiner still determining why Pahoa man died in police custody

MEDIA RELEASE

An autopsy performed on the body of a 38-year-old Pāhoa man has ruled out foul play.

On June 16, Clarence George Keliinui Hatori was in custody in the police cellblock when he collapsed and was transported to Hilo Medical Center.

On June 30, Hatori was pronounced dead. An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

On July 1, the medical examiner performing the autopsy determined that, although foul play was ruled out, she will await toxicology results and additional analysis before making a determination as to the cause of death.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section are continuing the investigation, which is classified as a coroner’s inquest.
