The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory for all island from 6 a.m. Friday (July 1) through 6 p.m. Saturday (July 2).

Winds will be coming from the northeast to east increasing to 15-30 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Gusts to 60 mph are expected over the summit of Haleakala. Winds will be strongest over mountain ridges and high terrain along with downslope areas of mountains.

Military convoys from Kawaihae Harbor to Pohakuloa beginning Friday (July 1)

Oahu-based service members are scheduled to convoy from Kawaihae Harbor to Pohakuloa Training Area, beginning Friday. The scheduled convoy times are from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.-10 p.m., July 1-3 and July 5-8.

Lava flow viewing area in Kalapana opens 3 p.m. Thursday (June 30)

The active lava flow from Puʻu ʻŌʻō is making its way over the Pulama Pali along the western boundary of the former Royal Gardens Subdivision. The emergency road to lava viewing will be open 3 p.m. on June 30, 2016.

Fire/rescue crews responded to an 11:47 a.m. alarm Tuesday (June 28) to 15-1726 32nd Avenue in Hawaiian Paradise Park for a structure fire.

Crews arrived to find a single story home about 40 feet by 50 foot with fire coming out on the garage side of the residence. Heavy black and gray smoke was coming out of the living room and bedroom areas.

Generator stolen from county facility in Hilo

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying anyone involved in a break-in at a Hawaiʻi County facility on Railroad Avenue. The break-in occurred early on the morning of May 18. A generator was removed from the facility. Surveillance cameras captured images of the suspect and a suspect vehicle.

‘Active Shooter’ presentation in Naalehu on July 6, 2016

The Hawaiʻi Police Department will make an “active shooter” presentation in Nāʻālehu on Wednesday, July 6. The presentation will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Nāʻālehu Community Center. It is designed to help individuals increase their survivability should they encounter an active shooter or other type of active violent incident.

Officer May Lee

Lee is Kohala’s Officer of the Quarter for January-March, 2016

The Hawaiʻi Island Safety and Security Professionals Association recognized Officer May Lee as “Kohala Officer of the Quarter” for January-March during a ceremony on May 13. Officer Lee was honored for a traffic enforcement project that led to the arrest of a wanted person who was in possession of a loaded gun.
