A Waimea woman has been charged with five offenses related to a stolen rental car and a stolen personal van.

On May 11, a Nissan Altima was stolen from a rental car company on Kupipi Street in Kailua-Kona.

On Wednesday (May 18), Kona Patrol officers were making checks for the stolen car when they spotted it traveling north on Kealakaʻa Street in Kailua-Kona. Officers attempted to stop the woman driving it, but it continued at a high rate of speed into a school zone and a residential area.

The car was located a short time later parked on the 74-1200 block of Ililoa Street, where officers arrested 33-year-old Elaine Nicole Abbot on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. She was taken to the Kona police cellblock while detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

Investigation determined that Abbott was also a suspect in the theft of a Chevrolet Uplander from the 65-1200 block of Opelu Road in Waimea on May 5.

On Friday (May 20) Abbot was charged with two counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and one count each of resisting an order to stop, reckless driving and driving without a license. Her bail was set at $5,500.

She remains at the cellblock pending her initial court appearance scheduled for Monday (May 23).
