Police DUI stats for the week of May 9-15, 2016

During the week of May 9, 2016, through May 15, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 36 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Twelve of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 425 DUI arrests compared with 364 during the same period last year, an increase of 16.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 538 major accidents so far this year compared with 574 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 10 fatalities, compared with six fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in nine fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 50 percent for fatal crashes and 11.1 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
