Police DUI stats for the week of May 2-8, 2016

During the week of May 2, 2016, through May 8, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested twenty-three motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 389 DUI arrests compared with 342 during the same period last year, an increase of 13.7 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 505 major accidents so far this year compared with 539 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 10 fatalities, compared with five fatal crashes (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in seven fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 80 percent for fatal crashes and 42.9 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
