Runaway brushfire in Kailua-Kona Wednesday (March 2)

The Hawai’i Police Department reports that Lako Street and Kololia Street intersection is now open. Motorists are advised to proceed with caution as Fire crews remain in the area to monitor and address flare ups from this brush fire.

The Hawaii Police Department reports a road closure at the intersection of Lako and Kololia Streets due to a large brush fire. Motorists are being Advised to avoid the area and take alternate routes as the Hawai’i Fire Department battles this fire.

1:25 p.m. Wednesday (March 2) update on Kona brushfire by Hawaii County Civil Defense

Hawaii Fire Department reports a runaway brush fire in the Kailua-Kona area between Kololia Place and Halawai Place off of Lako Street. This is in the area of the Komohana Kai Subdivision.

Due to heavy smoke and fire conditions some area residents are being evacuated. An emergency evacuation center has been opened at the Old Kona Airport Gym. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to use alternate routes if possible. Fire personnel and heavy equipment are on scene and working to contain the fire.
