A group of young adults were sitting in a tidepool when a large wave enveloped the group and pulled a 19-year-old man and 19-year-old woman across the rocky shoreline into the ocean. The man made his way through the high surf to get back to shore, the woman could not get ashore.

The fire department’s Chopper Two was able to drop two rescue specialists into the water to stay with the woman until she was able to be picked up by a passing tour boat.

Both of those swept away were taken to Kona Community Hospital for treatment.

Fire dispatch notes that although the area is popular amongs cliff jumpers and swimmers when large surf moves in shoreline areas to exit the water become limited.
