Autopsy shows Hilo man died of gunshot wound to the chest on Thanksgiving

An autopsy conducted Monday (November 30) has determined that 39-year-old Keola Penovaroff of Hilo died from a gunshot wound to the chest. The shooting took place on Thanksgiving evening (November 26) on West Kawailani Street in Hilo.

Thirty-four-year-old Kalani Lono Kaohimaunu was arrested Saturday (November 28) and charged Sunday (November 29) with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, ownership of a firearm prohibited and place to keep a firearm in connection with the shooting. His bail was set at $1 million. He was scheduled for his initial court appearance on Monday (November 30).

Fifty-two-year-old Charity Kumia of Keaʻau, who was arrested with Kaohimaunu on unrelated charges, was released from police custody Monday pending further investigation.

Police continue to ask that anyone who may have witnessed the shooting call Detective Todd Pataray at 961-2382 or email him at todd.pataray@hawaiicounty.gov.
