Mountain View man charged with manslaughter after Halloween assault victim dies

A man arrested in connection with a fatal Halloween assault has been charged in the victim’s death.

At 10:30 p.m. Wednesday (November 4), after conferring with prosecutors, detectives charged 31-year-old Kallen Imade of Mountain View with manslaughter. His bail was set at $250,000.

Imade is being held at the Hilo police cellblock until his initial court appearance scheduled for Thursday (November 5).

At 11:30 p.m. Saturday (October 31), South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report of an unconscious man in a parking lot on the 100 block of Hema Street. Witnesses reported that the victim had been involved in an affray with another man and that the other man had left the area.

The victim, 49-year-old Alfred Vea of Hilo, was taken to Hilo Medical Center with a head injury and later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu in critical condition.

Imade turned himself in to police Tuesday morning (November 3) and was initially arrested on suspicion of assault.

Vea was pronounced dead at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday (November 4). The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office is scheduled to conduct an autopsy Thursday (November 5) to determine the exact cause of death.
