During the week of November 23, 2015, through November 29, 2015, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 28 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 992 DUI arrests compared with 1,062 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.6 percent.

Autopsy shows Hilo man died of gunshot wound to the chest on Thanksgiving

An autopsy conducted Monday (November 30) has determined that 39-year-old Keola Penovaroff of Hilo died from a gunshot wound to the chest. The shooting took place on Thanksgiving evening (November 26) on West Kawailani Street in Hilo.

Police arrest and charge man with Hilo Thanksgiving Day murder

At 6 p.m. Sunday (November 29), 34-year-old Kalani Lono Kaohimaunu was charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, ownership of a firearm prohibited and place to keep a firearm. His bail was set at $1 million.

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two adults wanted in connection with an attempted burglary investigation in Hilo. At about 7:45 a.m. Friday (November 27) an unknown man and woman attempted to enter a home on the 800 block of Kūkūau Street in the Sunrise Estates subdivision.

Police have identified a suspect as 34-year-old Kalani Lono Kaohimaunu. He is described as 5-foot 10, 160 pounds with brown hair. He was last seen in Kalapana at 9 a.m. Friday (November 27) driving a dark blue Honda 4-door sedan.

Volcano Watch: Mount Fuji workshop focused on how to manage tourism on active volcanoes

In early November, volcano scientists from participated in a workshop at the Mount Fuji Research Institute in Japan. Talks and discussions during this workshop were focused on the best ways to protect tourists in active volcanic areas.
