High Surf Warning for Hawaii Island leads to beach closures

1 p.m. Hawaii County Civil Defense high surf, beach and road closure message.

The National Weather Service High Surf Warning for the North and West facing Shores of Hawaii Island remains in effect. Surf heights of 20 to 30 feet along the north facing shores and heights of 15 to 20 feet along the west facing shores can be expected. Peak surf conditions may coincide with the high tides. The high surf warning is expected to continue through 6 p.m. tonight. Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers are advised to exercise caution and to heed all advice given by Ocean Safety Officials.

Kalanianaole Avenue is now open to traffic.

In addition the following beach parks are closed today:

  • Richardson
  • Leleiwi
  • Carlsmith
  • Kealoha
  • Onekahakaha
  • Coconut Island

Coastal areas can expect strong breaking waves, shore breaks and strong longshore and rip currents making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed the advice given by ocean safety officials and be careful. Know your limits and when in doubt, don’t go out.

Boaters should expect recreational surfers and bodyboarders using harbor channels to access surfing areas.
