Man dead after swimming accident in Wailuku River

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 3:34 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Oct 7) to Piihonua Bridge at the Wailuku River for an unresponsive swimmer.

Witnesses said the 18-year-old man was underwater for about 3-5 minutes before bystanders were able to get him out to the riverbank. The bystanders performed CPR until rescue crews arrived to get the man to an ambulance which took him to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition.

The man was reported to have died.

An 18-year-old man died Wednesday (October 7) after being swept down the Wailuku River in Hilo.

He has been identified as Kevin Jay Ishikawa of Hilo.

In response to a 3:34 p.m. call, police learned that Ishikawa had been crossing the river after swimming with three friends near the Piʻihonua Bridge, when he was swept down stream. Two of his friends pulled him from the river and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation until Fire Department personnel arrived. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m.

Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
