Woman robbed of purse Tuesday morning in Hilo

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a robbery Tuesday morning (September 29) in Downtown Hilo.

In response to a 6:02 a.m. call, South Hilo Patrol officers responded to the 200 block of Kamehameha Avenue, where a 47-year-old woman reported that she had been sleeping in the doorway of a business when a man tugged on her purse. During a struggle, he kicked her and then fled on foot with the purse.

The suspect is described as a “local male” in his late 20s or possibly early 30s, about 6-feet tall and 200 pounds. He was wearing dark shorts and a black jacket. He was last seen with the victim’s black purse near the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Haili Street.

Police ask anyone with information about his identity or any other information about this case to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
