Crash and downed tree causes Hawaii Island road closures

Kaiminani Drive (Kona)

Following an early morning traffic collision, Kaiminani Drive above the Laui Street intersection had been closed for several hours while police investigated the collision. The roadway is now open, however police urge motorists to drive safely.

Hawaii County Civil Defense 7:45 a.m. update on Kaiminani Drive Closure

Hawaii County police report Kaiminani Drive, about 0.1 miles above Laui Street, is closed until about 11 a.m. or 12 noon due to a fatal traffic crash. Motorists should seek alternate routes.

Mamalahoa Highway (Hamakua Coast)

UPDATED (8:35 a.m. on 8/3/2015)

Hawaii County Police report Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 19) near Paauilo is now open to traffic in both directions. The downed tree has been cleared. Motorists are asked to use caution when driving in the area.

Hawaii County Civil Defense 8:15 a.m. update on Mamalahoa Highway Closure

Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 19) near the 34-mile marker (near Paauilo) is blocked due to a downed tree. Personnel from the State Highways Division are en route. The road is expected to be closed until about 9:15 a.m. No alternate routes are available.
