Hawaiʻi Island police are searching for a 43-year-old Hāmākua man who is wanted on a bench warrant.

Dan Vanells, who also goes by the names Dan Van Ells and “Danno,” is wanted for contempt of court. He is also wanted for questioning in connection with another incident.

He is described as 5-foot-10, 175 pounds with hazel eyes, blond hair and possibly a goatee. He was last known to live in Waipio Valley.

During the week of August 24, 2015, through August 30, 2015, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 693 DUI arrests compared with 790 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.3 percent.

Average retail gasoline prices in Hawaii have fallen 8.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.09/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 355 gas outlets in Hawaii. This compares with the national average that has fallen 12.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.47/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf warning until 6 p.m. Tuesday (Sept 1) for north, east and south shores of Hawaii Island.

Surf is forecast to be in the 6-12 foot range overnight rising to 15-20 feet late Sunday.

Very high ocean water is forecast to be surging and sweeping across beaches, coastal benches and lava flows creating the potential for impacts to coastal properties and infrastructure including roadways.
