The Hawaiʻi Isle Police Activities League partnered with the Andrews Basketball Association and Waiākea Intermediate REACH program, and 107 youths from 10 teams participated in the HI-PAL “Click It or Ticket” basketball high school and intermediate school championships this past weekend at Andrews Gym.

The tournament, held in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), provided education to parents and youth in using their seat belts when operating or being a passenger in a motor vehicle.

“Each participant and their parent pledged to use their seat belts,” said Sergeant Robert Pauole of the Traffic Services Section. “As with the NHTSA national campaign, we ask parents to make sure that their kids are consistently and properly wearing their seat belts every time the car is moving and we urge parents to never give up until their kids buckle up.”

In addition to gaining knowledge, participants played basketball.

The Waiākea Warriors edged Paiʻea 51-49 to claim the tournament championship. Calvin Mattos scored the go-ahead basket with 23 seconds remaining, and after several heartbreaking attempts, Paiʻea missed a three-point shot as time expired, giving Waiākea the title. Mattos led the champions with 23 points and Kahinu Alapai added 12. Bayley Malinguis paced Paiʻea with 14 points.

Members of the championship Waiakea squad include Mattos, Alapai, Wes Amuimuia, Ken Bugado, Cameron Caravalho-Chinen, Noah Ferreira, Nigel Henry, Shaun Kojima and Justin Tavares.

Saint Joseph ran past Hilo 57-42 to claim third place. Manato Fukuda scored 16 and Cole Desilva 12 to lead St. Joseph.
