Winter storm warning for Big Island summits, summit road closed

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter storm warning for Big Island summits above 12,000 feet until 6 a.m. Thursday (March 5).

Heavy snow accumulation up to 15-25 inches for Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Winds are currently 15-25 mph from the southwest. Temperatures are in the upper 20s with visibility under a half mile in the clouds.

Mauna Kea summit access road is closed above the Visitor Information Station due to ice and snow on the roadways.
