The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter storm warning for Big Island summits above 12,000 feet until 6 a.m. Thursday (March 5).

Heavy snow accumulation up to 12-18 inches is forecast for Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Winds are currently 10-20 mph from the southwest and are forecast to strengthen to 20-30 mph Wednesday night. Temperatures are forecast for the upper 20s with visibility under a half mile in the clouds.

Mauna Kea summit access road is closed above the Visitor Information Station due to ice and snow on the roadways.
