Police arrest man in connection with Hilo burglaries

A 25-year-old man is in police custody in connection with burglaries at two Hilo businesses.

At 11:09 p.m. Monday (October 27), South Hilo patrol officers responded to a report of a burglary at a business on the 700 block of Leilani Street in Hilo. They arrived to find a shattered glass door. A security video showed a man breaking the glass with a baseball bat and stealing items valued at $225.

While officer were still at the scene, police received a report of another burglary in progress on the 1400 block of Kalanianaʻole Street. The glass door at that business also was shattered and items valued at more than $2,000 had been removed. Police attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle, but he fled from the area.

Police investigation was able to identify the suspect and link him to both burglaries. Alexander S. Bacdad was located Tuesday (October 28) in Kaʻū. He was arrested and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigati0ns Section continued the investigation.

At 10:10 a.m. Wednesday (October 29), Bacdad was charged with two counts of burglary and two counts of theft. His bail was set at $6,500. He remains at the cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Thursday (October 30).
