64-year-old Kailua-Kona man dies after moped crash

A 64-year-old Kailua-Kona man has died as a result of a single vehicle crash October 9 on Hinalani Street near Anini Street.

He was identified as Michael W. Fox.

Responding to a 6:30 p.m. call, Kona police determined that a 2008 Adly moped was traveling on the right side of the lane heading east on Hinalani Street near Anini Street and passing a vehicle that was making a left turn onto Anini Street when it reportedly struck a rut in the road. The operator was thrown from the moped, which eventually ending up on top of the lower portion of his body.

Fox was taken to Kona Community Hospital and later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he was pronounced dead on October 10 at 8:12 p.m.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation. The exact cause of death is pending the autopsy report.

This is the 10th fatality so far this year compared with 23 fatalities at this time last year.
