Hawaii 24/7 Staff

The county helicopter Chopper 1 experienced engine failure Tuesday and made an emergency landing near Pololu Valley on the Hamakua Coast.

The helicopter was on an evacuation mission in response to Hurricane Iselle at the time, according to a Fire Department incident report.

No injuries were reported and the helicopter did not appear damaged.

The U.S. Coast Guard received an emergency signal from the chopper at 12:44 p.m. Tuesday and it was located by a Paradise tour helicopter.

The crews were taken out and a mechanic will assess the aircraft for removal, HFD said.

The department has a backup helicopter service to continue emergency services.
