The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood watch for all islands from 6 p.m. Saturday through 6 p.m. Monday (July 19-21).
The weather system that is currently Tropical Storm Wali will arrive in Hawaii and combine with an upper level through to bring the threat of heavy rain and thunderstorms to the islands. These rains are expected to reach the Big Island and Maui Saturday night and the rest of the state on Sunday.
The greatest chance of flooding will occur over the Windward slopes of the islands.
Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
