Flood advisory for the Big Island due to heavy rains in Kona

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 10:15 p.m. Monday (May 26).

At 7:12 p.m. weather radar showed heavy rain near Kealakekua or about 10 miles Southeast of Kailua-Kona. This area of heavy rain was moving South Southeast at 10 mph.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.

This advisory may be extended beyond 10:15 p.m. if heavy rain persists.
