Harry Char’s new book demonstrates the seriousness of education through Carson’s character. Witness how a young kid is able to help “The Man Who Could Not Read.”

The story is a lesson to young people on the value of reading. Nine-year-old Carson is not an enthusiastic student, but he is surprised to find a grown man who cannot read.

Although he has been cautioned against talking to strangers, the man looked so sad and in need of help. Carson befriends the stranger and helps him through a difficult and lonely situation.

Char was born and raised in Honolulu. He and his late wife Walnita of 54 years were married in Vogelweh, Germany. After graduating high school, the author served on active duty with the U.S. Army.

After leaving the Army, he then joined the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and after serving 30 years finally retired with the rank of captain.

Char graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and went on to receive his Masters Degree in Education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

He taught school in Nevis, Minn.; Kaiserslautern, Germany; and in Hawaii. He retired from education as an elementary school principal in Hilo, Hawaii.

Over the years, the author has written short stories to encourage his children and grandchildren to read, to build confidence and self-esteem, to trust God, and develop godly values.
