Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:32 p.m. alarm Thursday (May 15) to the Suisan warehouse offices in Hilo for a structure fire.

Firefighters found the Western end of the building engulfed in flames with the fire coming out of the roof. Fire crews were able to get the blaze under control by 1:05 a.m. Friday (May 16) and declared the fire out at 3:30 a.m.

Kamehameha Avenue was blocked-off as fire crews and vehicles from Hawaii County and the Hilo International Airport were at the scene Friday morning.

Suisan staff were working at the warehouse when the blaze broke-out and had just finished loading truck in preparation for Friday morning deliveries. Workers were able to get out and none were injured. The fire was in a portion of the warehouse which housed the administration offices, accounting and human resources department for Suisan. The company was planning to locate temporary offices in Hilo for staff to work.

Other buildings at the site were not damaged and the Suisan Fish Market located on Banyan Drive is open for business as usual. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
