Brushfire consumes 12 acres at Punaluu Beach Tuesday (April 22)

Fire crews responded to a 5:52 p.m. alarm Tuesday (April 22) for a brushfire in the Punaluu area of Ka‘u.

Firefighters arrived to find a brushfire on the Southern end of Punaluu Beach. Winds blowing from the East Northeast at 25-35 mph spread the fire South through brush and trees. The fire had already burned 1/4 acre with a 50-75 foot front line to the fire.

Crews used off-road vehicles to access and fight the leading edge of the fire with other crews protecting the Colony One condominiums and roadways.

Fire dispatch reports the brushfire under control by 8:03 p.m. with crews spending the night on site to put down hotspots flaring up.

A total of 12 acres were burned, there were no injuries reported, no structures were involved, the area burned is vacant land and the cause of the fire is unknown.
