The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 5:15 a.m. Thursday (April 3).

At 2:06 a.m. weather radar showed heavy rain falling at one to two inches per hour immediately upslope from Volcano, Glenwood and Mountain View. Rain is moving ashore from the Northeast becoming anchored in this area so in addition to ponding many streams, rivers and gulches may see rapidly rising water levels over the next few hours through the Puna District as far as the Coast.

Other locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, Kapoho, Papaikou, Keaau, Hawaiian Paradise Park and Hawaiian Beaches.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
