Winter weather advisory for Big Island summits


Mauna Kea summit webcams (3/28-29/14)

The winter weather advisory continues for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the Big Island until 6 p.m. this evening (March 30).

Sleet and snow are falling on the summits leading to one to two inches of snow and patchy ice on the ground. Winds are coming from the Southwest to West at 10-25 mph. Temperatures range from the upper 20s to mid 30s. Visibility is below half a mile at times.

As of 5:40 a.m. the road to Mauna Kea summit was closed above the Visitor Information Station due to ice and snow on roadways. At above 13,000 feet six inches of fresh snow fell overnight. Road crews are working on clearing roadways.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a winter weather advisory for the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 10,500 feet until 6 p.m. Sunday (March 30).

Snow, and freezing rain are falling on Big Island summits leading to accumulations of up to three inches of snow and a coat of ice. The summit access road on Mauna Kea has been closed to traffic due to poor road conditions.

Winds on the summits are variable to 15 mph with temperatures in the mid 20s to near 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Visibility is below 1/2 mile at times on the summit.
